Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Gagging vs choking

I know the difference but it doesn't mean I still don't get nervous when I hear my son gag when I give him a wagon wheel.

I offer him wagon wheels and puffs.  At meal times I have given him a small bite of a pancake and other soft foods.  He just doesn't have the idea down yet and he gags.

So when he does gag do I just keep trying until he gets it or do I stop because he is clearly not ready?  I normally just stop because I get nervous but I wasn't sure if that is going to slow down the prgress he could make with learning how to chew.

With my DD I don't remember this ever being an issue but I think I started later with her.  I think maybe 9 months old.

Re: Gagging vs choking

  • Because gagging is not choking, and I know the difference (as you say you do), it doesn't scare me.  It's part of learning.  Every gag, I feel like, is one step closer to no gags at all.  He's been feeding himself for a little over a month now, and we have very little gagging b/c I don't stop or intervene.  I'd keep an eye on him and let him learn!  GL :)
