Ammonia smell on wet PFs

The PFs smell clean coming out of the washer, but they stink like ammonia after DS pees. I'm reading I need to strip them, sun them, Bac-Out, what do you suggest? I have Bac-Out, plain Dawn, not really a place to sun them though.

  • I'm doing it right now :)  In the words of my CD genius friend, Wash, rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse..... then rinse more.  dawn definitely would speed up the process.  I wish I had some!

  • Generally, ammonia smell equals detergent build-up.  Wash the clean CDs with a squirt of Blue Dawn on hot, and then rinse, rinse, rinse until no bubbles. After that, you may want to reduce the amount of detergent you use and/or increase the amount of water in your wash cycles.

Just a note of caution though, using Dawn in your washing machine will void it's warranty.  If that matters, you can presoak them in the bathtub with Dawn and hand rinse.  Then put them in the washer on a hot cycle (no detergent) to rinse them more.

If this is the first time you have smelled ammonia, and it's not terrible you can just try a hot water stripping first.

Heh, I'm secretly waiting on my washer to die :)

He's 3 months old, we've been using these for about 6 weeks. I'll try the hot water strip first, then if it's still stinky I'll try Dawn.

    Thanks!

  • Hi uncharch! I have a 3 month old as well and just started noticing the ammonia smell this week. Must be a common time to have to do a first deep clean :). Mine are in a hot soak right now!
