Workout?

When do you workout?  I am having trouble finding time with 2 kids and I'm still on maternity leave.  When I go back to work in 3 weeks, I know it will be even tougher.  We have a treadmill and free weights at our house, so I think I will have to get up at 5am at least a few days a week to ensure I get a workout in.

Anyone have any tips or words of wisdom?

  • I workout during my lunch break and eat at my desk. The first few months w/ a newborn I was extremely tired and couldn't wake up any earlier.

    Do you shower after the workout?  I get pretty sweaty and have to wear a suit to work, so cannot picture enough time for me to workout and then get ready again during my lunch break.

  • I get up at 5 am and still don't have time to workout then.  I barely get to work on time.  I aim for a 3 mile walk every night when I get home but I have to do it before dinner or it gets dark.  I don't go to the gym because the closest is 20 minutes from home the opposite direction from work.  I don't do it at lunch time because of the sweaty showering factor.  If I'm going to work out it's going to be enough to need a shower!  Once since DD was born I did an actual workout at home with my yoga ball and dumb bells.  I just find sleep much more important now than working out, beyond the walk at least, so I can function at work.  I don't feel guilty about the walk because I always take DD with me and she loves to watch the neighbor's animals and trees and clouds and nap in the jogging stroller.  I'd say do whatever is convenient for you, no matter how crazy it is.  You might have to work out at 11 pm at an all night gym or go for a jog at 4 am before the kids are awake.

  • I have a personal trainer that I work out with twice / week.  Once at 6p (Mondays) and once at 6a (Fridays).  It's amazing how motivated you get when you have to plunk down money.  I miss a part of Monday evening with him, but I don't feel guilty about it.  It's only a half hour-ish that I'm gone.  He's fine.  :-)

    I also work out Saturdays / Sundays during my son's nap.  I sometimes work out one additional evening during the week after he goes to bed, although I haven't been doing that lately since we've been packing to move out-of-state.

  • I got to the gym around 5 am and am usually there until 6:15, it's right around the corner from my house so I'm able to get home and get myself ready while my DH gets the kids up and fed. We're usually out of the house by 7:30. When DH has to travel for work I get up and do p90x yoga or I take that day off and try to get to the gym on the weekend.
  • I... get up at 5 am. After the first week, my body reset its internal alarm clock and I don't seem to be as tired. But there's no way I could get it in after work, so waking up early was the only option.
  • Yes, I shower. I actually adjusted my workday to include 1 hr 15 min lunch to allow for my workout and a 3 min shower. Just enough to get the sweat off w/ soap and feel clean. I don't wash my hair. I spritz myself w/ BBW body spray at the end. I also reapply minimal make-up.

  • My daughter is a toddler now and sleeps through the night, etc. so I get up early and do a workout video (current:  Biggest Loser Cardio Max).  I aim for 3 times a week.  When the weather is nice and to switch it up, I try to do a 30 minute walk in the morning before work if my husband is still home...All that said, sleep is more important to me so if I was getting up with a new baby, I would not be able to do this!

    I cancelled my gym membership finally - I just couldn't get it together to get there.

  • With my first two, I was close to home and worked out over lunch break, showered, back to work.  With the third, I have been back to work for 2 weeks.  I try to get 30 min in the morning, even though it means getting up early.  Many days I have to REALLY motivate myself to get out of bed...Stick out tongue

  • I work out either early in the morning or on my lunch break. You just have to make it a priority and make time for it, like anything else. I consider it part of my "me" time.

  • I go after dinner about 7...DD goes to bed at 730 so I don't miss out on too much time with her.  I tried going at 5am when it opened but it was too exhausting.  Going in the evenings still gives me time with DH without feeling like I have to go to bed earlier because of waking up earlier.

  • Do you have a stroller you can fit both kids in? I only have 1 child so I can't really understand the dynamic of more than that, but as of right now, I take DS on a really long walk every night (or almost every night, once it cools off a little), usually 1.5-2.5 miles depending how I am feeling. Also, I use my free weights as well 3-4 times a week, after DS goes to bed. I refuse to wake up early.

  • Unfortunately I get up at 4am every morning to workout in our basement. It sucks but it's seriously the only time I can workout.

  • We have a treadmill too and I either wake up at 5 or wait until after bedtime to run on it.  I run with her in the BOB stroller.  Or I go to the gym in my hospital during lunch. 

    I manage to get in 5 good workouts most weeks.  I need to work out though. It is non-negotiable for me.  I am miserable if I don't feel fit and thin.
