Gotta love unexpected upgrades

Our local IT guy was in my office today to install some software for a new air card as mine died last time I was out of the office.  Super nice guy and we chat sometimes about baking and such.  Anyway, he said "Man, your computer is so old!"

Uh, it's about 2-3 years old.  Not ancient.  He pointed out how slow it is.

"Um, are you suggesting I have my laptop meet with an unfortunate accident?"

No.  But he did suggest I put in for a computer evaluation.  Later that same day, he stopped by and told me he was almost done with my new computer.  I'm just giddy I get a new laptop -- mine does take about 5-10 minutes to boot up or close down.  Then he frowned at my monitor.

"Do you want a dual monitor set-up?"

"you can do that?  It's not a necessity."  True.  Would be nice but I'm not some techno savvy person who needs the latest stuff.

"Sure, no problem.  I'll get you hooked up."

Sweet!  So out of a busted air card, I get a newer, faster laptop and a dual monitor set-up.  Nice Tuesday surprise.

  • Don't you love that! I got an upgrade (finally) with my workstation (ugh - thin client), but it's made an enormous difference. You won't want to give up the dual monitors either, I find it so useful. I miss them at home!

  • Nice!! I had to fight tooth and nail for IT to replace my 6 year old computer.

Dual monitors are awesome by the way. I love mine!!!

  • It's always good to befriend the IT guys :)  I kick myself for not taking the dual-monitor set-up when it was offered to me a year or two ago, since the guy who offered it to me left the company and that opportunity seems to have gone with him :P

  • ugh, after battling with my computer all morning that sounds wonderful.  I do have a dual monitor setup already and I don't know how people work without one.

  • It pays to be nice to the IT guys. :) I just got an unexpected upgrade to a 22" monitor and then triple monitors!! (I do graphics intensive work).  LOVE
  • I sorely miss the dual-monitor set up I had at my old job. It is awesome!

It's pretty much what it sounds like -- two monitors side by side.  You can use it to easily compare various versions on screen or what many I know do is keep one devoted to IMs and email access and the other for a working document.  That way you don't have to shut out of anything while you are checking new messages.

  • That's awesome!  About a year ago, I had to fight to get a new monitor because mine kept dying (like would dim and then shut off intermittently).  They told me I really didn't need a new one...but I did eventually get one.  Glad your upgrade went easier than mine!
  • Love the dual monitors!!
