Stupid job hunting question

I'm about to begin a job search and it dawned on me that all of my prior work experience is under my maiden name.   How are potential employers checking education and former employment when you have a different name?   Social security number?   I don't recall seeing anything on an application as I guess they can't inquire about marital status.

I have always had to fill out paperwork for an official background check requiring my SSN and any alternate names.
