Working Moms

Anyone else have school age children?

How do you handle it when you can't make it to activities during the school day?

I'm a solo parent and both grandparents work. I have to miss parent lunch/book fair this week and DD is really upset. Taking off work isn't an option because I'm a new employee with no time off until next year.

Re: Anyone else have school age children?

  • they planned something for parents in the middle of the day????  that is pretty inconsiderate, IMO.  I don't make it to everything, but they really discourage parent participation in mid-day events, especially as KG goes on and after KG definitely not.  The PTA has some parent events in the AM before work.  In fact, we do breakfasts during the book fair (muffins for moms and donuts for dads) to increase sales.  I'd be tempted to shoot off an email to the PTA president to suggest morning events vs. mid-day.

  • Most of the really cool programs they put on are in the day, and so are most of the parent teacher interviews. I scramble to get one of the few evening slots for the interviews, and they go quickly - most of the parents work. I don't get to make many school hour activities, I'd be using most or all of my vacation time for that. My DKS have said that most parent don't make those. Fortunately, they do run the Christmas concert in the evening or we'd miss everything.
  • I try to make it when I can, my job is pretty flexible, but sometimes I just can't. Half the time my younger son's school forgets to notify me anyway, so I deal with mad after the fact. The couple that I've been to have only had a handfull of parents. My sons are thrilled when I make it but they know that mom and dad work.

  • My school district has a lot of SAHM and many part-time working moms.  Even the PTA meetings are held at 9am.

You go when you can and know that you can still be an awesome mom even if you miss a halloween party or 12.

  • My kids' school only has 2 events or so during the day. Either I take a day off or I work from home (school is 2 blocks away) to minimize the disruption. My job is pretty flexible and I work a ton, so they acknowledge that something has to give sometimes.

DH is a teacher. He never, ever gets to attend events.

  • Activities during the day that involve parents are a rarity in our school.

  • I fortunately have the ability to sneak out for an hour because I work nearby and my job is flexible enough to do so. That said I have only been to 1 even this year. We have had grandparents go in our place when we can't go. DS is still in the public preschool. I'm not sure how many opportunities there will be in kindergarten and moving forward.
