Natural Birth

Thoughts on chiropractors

In my birth class we were encouraged to go see a chiropractor to help with sciatic nerve pain and overall improve our posture.  I haven't been having any major pains yet, but want to know if anyone has any experience or benefited from going to a chiropractor in preparation for birth.  I plan on going drug-free so anything that can help open up my pelvis and move things along I am willing to try.

Re: Thoughts on chiropractors

  • I saw my chiro consistently during my first pregnancy (when it was covered in my insurance) and it did help me feel good.

I'm going next monday to see my chiro to make sure my hips are a happy place for baby to be, I wish I could go more but paying for our HB and extra money for the chiro just doesn't happen for this SAHM, but I wish it did

  • I go every week and get a massage every week. They are both business expenses for me since I own my own business and am on my feet a lot. I have scoliosis and severe sciatic pain sometimes, and this has allowed me to continue working as much as I need to. I've also had ribs and one of my hips out this pregnancy and chiropractic adjustments have helped with those. I highly suggest going to a good one, make sure to get some recommendations!

  • Yep, I'm going every 1-2 weeks right now and it helps tremendously with body pain (I have really none to speak of since going to see her). I'm also hoping it will help get both babies in optimal position for vaginal delivery (only A needs to be vertex, but both would be nice!)

  • I've been seeing various chiros for the past 8 years.  I was going every other week, but since becoming pregnant I started going 1 time per week.  My sacrum has been bothering me since week 8.  I just started going 2 times per week to help with the uncomfortableness.  Going twice a week is a drastic improvement in my sacrum from once a week.  I can't say enough good things about a good chiropractic adjustment.  Also as a side note, my baby has been in the perfect position for labor since week 25.  I can't say for sure it is because of the adjustments, but they certainly do not hurt!  GL.

  • I'm seeing one now and I wish I had seen one before/during my pregnancy.

DD was breech leading to a c/s and now seeing a Chiro I found out my hips are majorly out of alignment which was likely the reason.

I absolutely recommend it and think it's worth it, if for no other reason than it can prevent discomfort later and help labor go smoother.

  • The chiro fixed my back and hip pain when I was not able to even walk.  I though it was a quake untill it worked

  • Not going when PG with DS is one of my regrets. I had terrible pain and pelvic separation and this could've made a huge difference. I started seeing one post-partum as part of my healing (my issues were abnormal in that delivery didn't end the problems). I saw a general chiro and it was ho hum. When I started seeing one who specialized in PG-related conditions, it was like a whole new world. I am going regularly with this PG. My insurance doesn't cover it, but the OOP is not outrageous and the thought of not being in that terrible pain makes it SO worth it.
  • Going twice a week and very confident that it's helping manage back, sciatic and symphysis pubis pain but that it will also help me get both babies in good position for birth.

  • I had a tilted pelvis and symphysis pubis pain with #2 and #3 and the pain was awful.  I was afraid to go to the chiro.  I started going 2 years after having my last baby and she fixed my pubic bone pain and my pelvis, totally resolved all my pain issues.  With #4 I'm seeing her 2x a week and it's helping to keep everything in line.  I adore my chiro.  She will be adjusting me right up until the birth and then she'll adjust the baby as well.
  • I would see one that specializes in pregnancy. I hurt my back in 2nd tri and the chiro covered by my insurance really didn't know how to adjust pg women even though he was helpful with the back pain. Now I see a chiro that specializes in pg women and children and it's amazing the difference it's making with my body. When I don't see her twice a week I really feel all those aches and pains so much more. I have heard that it helps for an easier labor as well. Mine will even do labor house/hospital calls 24 hours a day which I'm keeping in mind.

  • I worked FT in retail sales with DD, and would have had to go out on leave at 6 months due to excruciating hip pain. After a couple visits to a Webster(PG) trained Chiro, I felt great and worked up until the day of delivery. I also had a fast easy birth. This time I am starting much early to prevent things from getting out of whack. My chiro recommended for me to follow my MW visit schedule.

  • I go and did with both my other pregnancies, it's a tremendous help for all your health not just structural.
  • My best night of sleep all week always happens after I see my chiropractor. I'd probably be a lot more uncomfortable and a lot b*tchier without her help!

  • On Sunday I was in so much pain I could not lift my foot to put on my shoe. I thought it was sciatic related but turns out I had pulled/strained my hip joint. One pelvic/back/neck adjustment and a night's sleep and I  was walking 100% better. Seriously - I was crying I was in so much pain and dragging my leg behind me. I'll be going probably 2x a month for the rest of this pregnancy. I also agree to see someone who specializes in PG women.
