I've read and researched all brands and types and I'm more undecided than ever. I just can't pull the trigger on such a large purchase when there are so many factors...what factor most influenced your final decision?
I researched what diapers I thought I wanted and then looked around until I could find them used. CDing is fairly common here, so our local CL always has the main brands listed for sale. I also never bought more than two of a diaper I liked if I bought it new (for the first time).
My stash has a huge variety in it, and I like it that way. My LO's body is always changing and different brands fit her better at different times. My favorite diaper changes month to month.
The only real risk I took was buying a used lot of 8 grovia AI2 shells and 20 inserts for $80. I knew if they didn't work for me, I could always resell them for at least that. They turned out to be MH's fav diaper and our go to daytime dipe.

For me, it was identifying the biggest potential obstacle for cloth being successful in our family, and picking the best diaper for that factor, balanced against quality, cost and other factors. DH had agreed to try cloth for the NB stage, and I wanted to make sure what we had was fool-proof so that we could get to the next stage, so ease-of-use was key.
Our Craigslist is also pretty active in selling cloth diapers so I have bought most off of there. I've researched a lot of the different kinds and do have a variety in our stash. I'm sure we'll have our favorites, but we'll just deal with using the others (as long as they work for us) or try and sell those to get more of what we like.
I'll reiterate variety if you aren't going to do a trial. Research only goes so far, because you don't know what will fit your baby best. I had decided I liked fuzzibunz and got a lot of 12 OS used. When I tried to transition DD into them, I hated them. I couldn't get the fit right on her little legs, and didn't like adjusting the leg elastics. DH prefers velcro closures, and I am actually liking fitteds with covers best. Luckily I resold the fuzzibunz and got my money back so I can buy something different, but I wish I would have had a variety from the beginning.
I was just talking about this with a friend the other day. I was more confused than ever after reading reviews. That is why we went with prefolds, I figured my parents/grandparents made them work and so can I
I think what pp mentioned about diaper trials sounds great, didn't know that was possible until I found this board.
We're sort of limited to prefolds since we won't have access to a dryer unless we want to pay for our building's not too reliable dryers. Since we're getting a portable washer and sticking to air drying, prefolds would dry the fastest for us instead of us having a giant stash of pockets/etc to make sure we have enough on hand while the rest take forever to dry.
We're trying a few different kinds of covers and we will have a couple other types of diapers too, but mainly prefolds. DH and I both know there's a slight learning curve but we don't mind, he just wants to avoid disposables at all costs, as do I.
I Was pretty set on AIOs after research and bought a pack of 6 AIOs. They worked well and we loved them for daytime use. Most pockets worked overnight with a hemp layer so we decided to go with the brand that was least bulky IOO.

I bought some different brands/types and went from there. Looking back it would have been much cheaper to do a diaper trial.
I cannot recommend doing a diaper trial enough, it will save you having to sell off diapers you don't like!
