constipation woes

Apparently, I get the lovely pregnancy symptom of constipation. But hey, I'll take any sign pregnancy related. What do you ladies find works best for relief? I've never had prune juice before, but guess I'll be trying that. Anything else recommended?

Re: constipation woes

  • Im on the same boat, and I'm still figuring out what will help with this. Sad

  • I actually have been having quite the opposite problem b/c I am afraid of hemorrhoids. I have been drinking water (like at least a half gallon) and eating apricots, watermelon, fiber filled cereals, etc.
  • I take my prenatals, 2 fiber gummy chews and 2 probiotic gummy chews and go every day without issue like clockwork after my one cup of coffee!  I had that problem terribly with pregnancy #1 so I knew I was going to get on the fiber and probiotics from the get-go with #2!

  • What's working for me is plenty of water, cereal, kellog's fiber bars, and oranges. Which oddly enough oranges I found out is what my mom did when she was pregnant with me.

  • Prunes, psyllium, kefir, colace and lots of water.

  • I would eat one or two prunes a day with lunch and that kept me pretty regular. If I skipped a day, I would notice a difference. Constipation sucks.

  • lots of fiber.......and lots of water or the fiber will just back you up more.  i ended up at a walk in clinic when i had constipation cramps real bad and they suggested milk of magnesia if it got really bad
  • Whole Foods carries these:

I highly recommend one or two at each meal. Make sure you are getting lots of leafy, green veggies and beans (keeps things moving).

Water! Take your current weight and divide it by two. That is how many ounces of water you should be drinking daily at MINIMUM. Watch out for caffeinated drinks. For every coke or coffee you have remember to drink double the amount of water (8 oz coffee = 16 oz of water to compensate for water loss).

Also, you can get some fiber gummies if you don't like the biscuits.

When in doubt you can take some colace. Just follow the instructions on the bottle and don't go too crazy with it. Its safe during pregnancy and doesn't make you go. It just makes it easier to go when you do.

If you can help it, don't strain.

Hope this helps!! I wish I could say that it gets better, but 2nd and 3rd tri constipation isn't pretty either. :(

  • I got stopped up from taking Zofran. I was taking the minimum dose possible a day and hadn't really "gone" in 3-4 weeks. Lets just say that BM gave me a little preview of what childbirth could be like. I took Colace, and used a suppository. I stopped the Zofran and now drink lots of water and make sure to get my fiber. Good luck!

  • I find that Colace KIND OF works for me. By that I mean that it only somewhat works & only sometimes. I have also been stocking up on the Fiber One products (love the brownies!) and eating dried fruit (lots of prunes!) Not much has worked. Acupuncture sometimes helps me a bit, too. I have taken Zofran, though, which I know is most of the reason I'm blocked up. I hope to go off the Zofran soon & not have this issue so much anymore.

  • My doctor gave me some trial prenatal vitamins that are called CitraNatal Harmony. They have a stool softener in them and I have noticed a difference. I do however try to drinks lots of water.
