Cloth Diapering

Major Ammonia Problem! Help please!!

I use BG Elementals.  I had started using them overnight with a hemp insert a while back and it was working well.  Then the amonia stink started.  Mostly just the am diaper.  I did a million extra hot washes and it never seemed to get rid of it for overnight (so I used disposables) and day diapers were fine.

Now my little man is mostly potty trained during day.  I hate using stupid disposables and would love to figure out a night time solution.  Should I add dawn to wash load?  Bleach?

I still use a diaper for naps and half the time its dry.  Any advice on doing diapers when you only have 2-3 every two days?

Thanks for any help!  I hate to use sposies and would love a solution, even if it means buying new diapers!

ETA: I use rockin green soap (1-2 tbsp) with regular washer. 1 cold wash, 1 hot wash with detergent, then 2 rinses.

Re: Major Ammonia Problem! Help please!!

  • Are they smelling like ammonia when he wakes up, or just after a pee? It's normal for ON diapers to smell like ammonia in the morning, but they shouldn't smell when they are clean or just after a pee.

I would try rinsing your ON diapers with a diaper sprayer (or by hand in the sink) before I put them in the pail.  This should help remove the urine so it can't crystalize and cause so much stink.

Since you have such a small load, I would wash every 3 days with towels to make sure you get enough friction to get the diapers clean.

Mostly smell just overnight (unless he was in it for awhile). But it's insanely strong in am & he has gotten what I believe is ammonia burn every time I've tried them overnight recently! Awesome pointers about towels and rinsing! Thanks!

Ditto this. I rinse all my ON dipes in the sink by hand every morning, and never had an issue with stink at all.

  • I was bleaching my ON fitteds nearly every week because of the crazy ammonia smell. It was the only thing that would work, until I tried putting 2 heaping spoonfuls of baking soda in the first rinse and doing a rinse cycle in the morning for just the ON diaper (maybe a waste of water, but worth it to me). It has been more than two months since I last bleached them and they still don't stink.
