I have pretty much made up my mind that I do not want an epidural. I'd ultimately like to do labor naturally and med free... At our hospital you are required to take an epidural class to have one when you go into labor. I have considered going to the class, just in case.... But I have been told that even if I wanted one I might not be given one because of my medical history.... I have a history of seizures (have been told epidural can cause seizures, especially if you are prone to them) and I have extremely low blood pressure... even while pregnant it's very low and epidurals can cause your blood pressure to lower, and can effect the baby. Does anybody know if they would refuse an epidural for these reasons? I have a Dr. appointment next Monday, so I plan to talk to her then but I was just curious. Obviously if there is any possibility that my medical issue could cause a problem I would refuse it.
Re: epidural question
Low blood pressure could potentially be a reason. There are things they should do before even giving you the epidural to help reduce the risk of your BP dropping or to help decrease the amount it drops. There are also things they can do if it starts dropping to help it stop. With that being said, I would imagine it would be at the discretion of your Dr since they should know your medical history. I'm sure if you asked your Dr at your next appointment, they would be able to give you some insight based on your specific circumstances.
I know that isn't really a black & white answer, but hopefully it helps.

It really depends on the anesthesiologist. I have arthritis in my back and I'm on Lovenox. So, I may be refused an epidural. We did not have to do a whole class, just watch a video and fill out a form. I did this as part of my childbirth class. I was told that one of the anesthesiologists would likely call me before my due date to discuss the information I listed. At that time, I would be able to get a better feel for my options.
Honestly, one of my biggest fears is not getting an epidural and needing a c-section. I do NOT want to be under general anesthesia when my baby is born. Also, at my hospital, if you are under general anesthesia for a c-section, your hubby can't be in the room!! I really don't want both of us to miss our baby's birth!!
