Allergy to crib sheet?

Hi all - I've been away from the bump for a while because as you all know raising a toddler leaves very little time for anything else. :) We're having an issue with crib sheets that I could use some advice on. My son appears to have an allergic reaction to most sheets. I had originally purchased his bedding from Land of Nod, but the crib sheet was a little rough and gave him red cheeks after sleeping on them, so I went with a softer Gerber jersey knit sheet. They really don't last long and develop holes easily, so I just bought some new organic cotton sheets from Pottery Barn at $25 a pop. They are not as soft as the jersey knit, but they seem pretty soft to me. We washed them in our normal detergent, which DS hasn't had a reaction to at all. He slept on them once and woke up with a rash all over his exposed skin (he was wearing footie pajamas, so his face, back of his neck, ears and hand/wrists were all affected). I can't think of any other reason he would have a rash, let alone on just those areas. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if you have any recommendations on sheets. The Gerber ones appear to be out of production or at least i haven't been able to find the same ones. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Re: Allergy to crib sheet?

  • In college, I got hives all over my body from some Wal-Mart sheets.  I didn't put two and two together until 6 weeks later and when I stopped using the sheets the rash went away.  I've never bought sheets from Wal-Mart again and I've never had another reaction.

I bet you could find jersey knit sheets on Amazon.

  • Selfie says its because cotton is now grown with all sorts of pesticides. But she conveniently fails to mention what sheets she's using (probably because they didn't pay for a promo on her blog). You could send her a message to ask. That girl seems to do a crazy amount of research. We have Tadpoles organic flannel sheets. I'm not overly impressed with them (and my kid doesn't have super sensitive skin) but they're decent and might be worth a try.  Also, Aden & Anais recently started doing sheets (including some organics) that you may want to try.
