Lupron Question (re: headaches)

Ladies, I need your advice, please!

I start Lurpon injections in the morning. I have heard the biggest side effect is headaches. This makes me nervous because I suffer from allergy induced migraines and do not tolerate them well at all. My allergies are already a mess with this warm Texas weather.

Did you get headaches with Lupron?

If so, how did you manage them? Any tricks for heading them off or lessening the blow?

Thank you!

Re: Lupron Question (re: headaches)

  • Yes, bad headaches.

What helped me : I kept the shades CLOSED. The less light in the house the better.  It's easier for me, we live in Seattle and the sunny days are few.  And, I work remotely from home, so I could stay locked up in the house like a hermit for days!!! I decreased the light, kept the TV off, turned the ringer off on the phone. The less noise / light the better I felt.

DH would rub my neck as well.. that helped :) I know you are very BRAVE and started this journey solo, maybe you could get one of those shoulder / neck massages?

Oh, and I gave up any scented fragrences.. I found that made my headaches worse as well.

    GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!! :)

  • I only got headaches after I stopped the BCPs and my estrogen levels crashed -- it was the low estrogen, and not the drug itself, that caused the headaches.  Once I started stims (and my estrogen levels started climbing) I was fine.

Hope it's the same for you -- or you don't get them at all.  I found that taking 2 XS Tylenol and then taking a nap or going to bed were the only way to get rid of them.

Severe MFI. Me: supposedly all clear but eggs showed vacuoles.

IVF #1 January 2012, ER Jan 14th: 34R, 27M, 23F. Day 3: 18 embies still strong. Day 5: zero "good," one "fair," the rest "poor." Transferred 3. None made it to blast or to freeze. Jan 28: BFN.

Lucky IVF #2: Transferred two beautiful day three embies on St. Patrick's Day. BFP on HPT 7dp3dt. Beta 1 (14dpER)=106; Beta 2 (16dpER)=140; Beta 3 (19dpER)=264! First u/s 4.17.

  • I had bad headaches and nausea when I was on Lupron for my last IVF cycle. My RE said only take Tylenol if the headaches get really bad and you can't tolerate it anymore. I dont know if the nausea was from the Lupron or awful headaches, but I would nibble on pretzels and sip ginger ale to help. My DH was very sweet and would brush my hair to help, lol, which just put me to sleep. I hope that you are lucky and don't have any side effects at all!! Good Luck to you!

  • Hi Melle.  I haven't read the prior responses, so please forgive me if what I say is repetitive.  I am a chronic tension headache and migraine sufferer, so I've been trying to manage headaches for decades.  One thing that I've recently started doing is applying ice to my head, neck and shoulders when I feel a headache coming on.  It really can help and is a nice alternative when we're strictly limited in the forms of medications we can take.

Another suggestion is to drink some caffeine (or take a combination of Tylenol and caffeine) which works as a vasoconstrictor and can help to minimize the pain.

Do you work with a neurologist for your migraines?  If so, there are other things you may want to consider.  I'm taking Prodrin for regular headaches (which admittedly isn't doing much to help) and Narco for true migraines and severe headaches.  It's about the best you can do while you're stimming.

Good luck!  Hopefully Lupron won't bother you.

  • Thanks Ladies.

I normally use Imitrex for migraines, but that's out while TTC and pregnant. I have an ice/heat ritual to manage the pain so hopefully I can keep them under control. Thankfully I work from home so I can nap often if I need to. : ) Although I have to work as much as I can. I am a consultant so I only get paid when I work... and I need to work to pay off this IVF!

I had mild/moderate headaches from day 4 of lupron to around day 9, after my dose was decreased I had no more headaches. Rest, heat and ice packs, and quiet helped the most. I found that Tylenol did nothing to help. Good luck!!

This!  Once you start growing some follies and your E2 starts rising, the headaches will stop. But until then, it does suck. I was couch-bound for 2 days last October.  Laying down on ice packs helps some and keep taking tylenol.   Hugs.
