3rd Trimester

Anyone else dread trying to sleep at night?

I have truly come to dread trying to get to sleep at night!  I have found that it is impossible for me to sleep on my left side - I've always been a right side/back sleeper.  Now, since back sleeping is off limits I'm left with my right side and wake up all the time with terrible hip pain...if my bladder doesn't wake me up first that is.  I do sometimes find myself on my back but roll back over onto my side again.  I am using a full-size Boppy pillow as well as a Boppy wedge pillow under my belly, but nothing seems to help.  During my 2nd tri, I slept in the recliner for 2 weeks when I was very ill due to congestion and I just do not want to go back there again...but it may be my only option.  Anyone else dealing with this - any suggestions?  TIA!

  • You're not alone. I can't sleep on my left side all the time because it hurts my upper back. I can't sleep on my back because it causes me to not be able to breathe. So, yeah, I do a lot of squirming at night and it isn't a very peaceful sleep.

  • I don't have any suggestions but I feel your pain. I flip back and forth between right and left side due to my hips huring so bad, then I have to get up to pee 4 or 5 times a night as well. Some nights my hips don't hurt as bad where I only flip a few times, but lately they have been hurting worse again where I can only stay on one side for and hour at the longest.

  • I dread trying to sleep, too - my body is restless more nights than not and it is a pain to try to fall asleep. Not fun.

  • Me but mostly because the darkness it claustrophobic for me and I'm now suffering from pregnancy related panic attacks.  I HATE IT.

  • Yes, it is very very painful to sleep now days! I especially hate weekends because DH doesn't get up for work at 4-5am (I get my best 2-3 hours of sleep when he's not in the bed!!) I think last night was the worst night ever. Not only do I have pain in my hips where I have to flip from right to left but I wake up with intense cramping pain in my entire tummy area and it makes it even harder to flip over.

Do you also sleep with a pillow between your legs and one behind your back? I find that helps a bit. I am literally surrounded by pillows!

  • Yep. I dread it all day!  I have SPD and can barely move as it is let alone get comfortable.  And on top of it I have a toddler who has suddenly decided sleeping through the night is unacceptable. Last night I got 2.5 hours. Awesome :(
  • Yoga.  Massage.

    Chiro?

    100% pure lavender essential oil.

    bath before bed?

thats my only shot at suggestions & trying to help relax the muscles that are keeping you from finding comfort.

  • Yes I feel your pain.  My MW said its pregnancy related insomnia. I have pretty much given up.  I find that I sleep best and more when I have completely worn myself out for the day. SO I try to go go go until about 8 or 9 then I relax and prepare to sleep. Good lcuk.

SN: My MW said benadaryl was okay and I find taking that when its really bad helps.

  • I feel exactly the same way. I have resorted to using 8 or 9 pillows and piling them up so that I can lay on my back but am in kind of a reclining position in bed. It has helped to take a lot of the pressure off my hips and allows me to breath easier if I am sleeping on my back because I am not laying flat. I also always have a pillow in between my knees when I rotate from side to side.

  • Me! I'm almost in tears every night and don't even want to bother getting into bed anymore.  On top of being uncomfortable, the itching (PUPPS), the insomnia, my hip hurt last night and I couldn't fall asleep.  It was never this bad for me with my last two pg. Less than 10 weeks to go for me!

  • Yes, I was always a stomach and back sleeper. But now I obviously can't sleep on my stomach and LO always wakes up and starts thumping my ribs/lungs if I try to lie on my back, even reclined. I've got 2 rolled up blankets on either side of me to cuddle at night and that helps the hip/back pain for a little while. But I pretty much have to flop my body over to the other side every hour to relieve the pain. I've woken up dh a few times with my frustrated violent rearrangements of pillows and blankets. I can't believe I have 10 weeks to go of things only getting worse Crying
Nevermind me, I'm too distracted by my mini-carrots to think properly image

  • It gets worse until you deliver.  I think it's nature's way of preparing you for those first weeks with no sleep.

  • Well, it's good to know that I'm not alone.  I dread having 9 more weeks and know that things are only going to get worse.  I have a feeling that I will find myself trying to sleep in the recliner again in the near future.  Thanks ladies!

  • The only time I can sleep is 4am -2pm and 4pm -6pm. So either I sleep the day away, or don't sleep at all. I use a think pillow in between my legs, one pillow for my head, and one feather pillow under my belly so it will form around, and a pillow behind my back. I've tried yoga, exercising, showers, baths, back rubs, foot rubs, and nothing worked for me. I think youe body has to just exhaust itself. I suggest sleeping ANY chance you can, whatever sleep you can fit into your schedule, take advantage of.
