Bananas

If you give your LO bananas, what do you do with the rest of them? My DD will only eat about 1/8 of the banana. DH and I don't eat bananas so they just go to waste.

DD is eating pretty much all finger foods now so I can't exactly puree into anything.

Re: Bananas

  • DS eats the whole banana...I think it's probably only about 3 ounces when mashed.

Maybe put the puree on her tray and let her play in it?  DS loves when I do this!

  • I just give her half a banana and she goes to town on it. It's soft enough that I'm not worried about choking. She's loves feeding herself. Just cover the end and the next day cut off a slice and feed the rest of the banana. :) My lo started off eating about 1/8 of a banana but now can easily eat 1/2.

  • Stick the rest in a ziploc baggie and save it for the next meal or next day. Or slice it up and freeze it. Or use it in a smoothie.

This. Or, you could always use it to make banana bread (with the help of a few other bananas, of course).

  • Those are all great options, but a smoothie and a banana bread? Like I said DH and I don't eat bananas. LOL!

I put it in the fridge, but the little amount she eats it still goes to waste.

  • We do end up wasting a lot of banana.  Fortunately, my H will eat them from time to time, but I am not a fan.

You could freeze them and then use the thawed banana, pureed, in a pancake batter for your LO.  Just flour, milk, and pureed banana?  Or make oatmeal fingers with some pureed banana in it.  We don't do any purees either, but you can add pureed bananas to other foods to make them "sweeter" without sugar. :)

ETA: here's a recipe I found just by googling for infant finger foods!

    1/2 smallbanana
    2 tbsp plain yogurt
1-2 tbsp fresh, ripepeach, peeled and cut into bite-size pieces
1-2 tbspbaby oatmeal/porridge(or regular oats ground in a food processor)

Mash the yogurt and banana together until well blended.
Add the peach cubes and stir well, until the cubes are coated.
Roll the cubes in the oatmeal flakes to make them easy for baby to pick up, then serve

Make them for your LO. If you make a load of banana bread it will keep in the freezer for a few months. Slice it up before you freeze it and pull out a little at a time for finger foods.

  • Just slice the banana into small chunks, throw them in a ziplock freezer bag and freeze them for later.  Pull out the amount you need a day ahead of time and they'll defrost overnight in the fridge. I do it all the time and it works great!

Great! Thanks! Also thanks to PP for the pancake suggestion.
