Double Charges?

We got our first ultrasound bill today and since we are having twins they charged us for two!!  According to the hospital and our insurance company this is common practice.  It irks me a little bit since it isn't like it was two appointments or twice as much work for the tech.  Just wanted to know from all of you experienced MoM's - did you get charged twice for everything throughout your pregnancy?  Looking forward to all these bills Indifferent

Re: Double Charges?

  • my insurance didnt get charged for 2, but it is double the work and takes twice the time to get all the info they need.  im regarding the 20 wk ultrasound where you get the gender scan and all the measurements are done for each organ, limb, etc.

Ditto this.  For the NT I was charged three times - although there was a slight reduction in the fee for babies 2 and 3.  It is more work and takes more time (so it's a lost appointment slot for someone else) - makes sense to me.

  • I can see that for the more labor intensive scans like the anatomy or the NT but this was like a 15 minute scan at 12 weeks that basically just confirmed we were having twins because my midwife said I was measuring larger.  I thought over $1500 was a really high amount to pay for a quick scan...but I could be off base.  That's $100 a minute!!  I'm just wondering if I should expect twice the price on everything.

  • I have had n ultrasound every appt and I'm 30 wks! I have been charged each baby each time! So yep double charged :) but I said the same thing as you unless it's a HUGE ultrasound it don't take that much more time to ck both!
  • I got charged double at every ultrasound with the MFM.  Each appointment wound up being about $3000.

$3000, not $30000. But yes luckily I have excellent insurance.  I keep saying I'm going to total all those statements... I'm sure it would be shocking.

Ahhh!  That's so crazy!  Now I'm embarassed for feeling bad for myself haha.

On a related note - my original ultrasound was with a different medical center.  I called my new doctor today and the price was only $225 for a routine ultrasound (not $1500!) and they laughed when I asked if they charge twice for twins.  Thank goodness I'm going to them for regular visits and not the center where I had it done earlier!  It must just vary based on where you go - strange!!

  • Yep, I was charged for two transvaginal u/s and two abdominal u/s at every single visit (until about 31w on, when they no longer checked my cervix). It actually took me a couple appts to realize they were charging me for two transvaginal u/s. By that point those u/s were *just* to check my cervix; they weren't looking at the babies that way at all. So I remember asking the admin staff about it and saying, "I have two babies, but I only have one cervix." ;) They laughed and fixed it.
