Thyroid Issues

I'm not really sure where to post this question, but I've had on MC at 7w and 2 chemical MC's. The doctor ran a bunch of tests recently and my TSH levels came back above normal. I am on synthroid currently for my hypothyroidism. My question is, could this by a cause of my MC's? I've had my levels checked before, and they seemed fine. The nurse said they weren't too far above normal, but enough to want to run another test, and possibly change my medication. I'm reaching for anything that may be the cause of this, and I'm wondering if anyone has in helpful information for me, or personal experiences. I've tried to google some things, but sometimes seeing someone has have experience with this is more helpful! Thanks in advance!

Re: Thyroid Issues

  • Ive had a CP, Ectopic & MC at 9w before i found out i have hypothyroidism & hashimotos disease... unfortunately ive had 2 chemicals sence then... its definitely possible that they were contributing factors... Theres really no way to tell, especially with me because i have/had so many other things wrong with me...

ETA: i just wanted to add that the 2 chemicals since i found out have come when my thyroid was well in normal range.

  • I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism a year ago.  I am currently taking 100mcg of synthroid.  This is what my RE told me..."pregnancy is like a stress test for the thyroid: the amount of thyroid hormone that needs to be released during pregnancy is increased by about 50 percent, and that?s because of some of the hormones related to pregnancy. If there is a dysfunction with the thyroid, it has been linked- especially hypothyroidism to miscarriage, preterm delivery, and also with decreased I.Q. in the unborn child." So that?s why having your thyroid checked is very important.

With underactive thyroid issues, there could be weight gain, sluggishness, dry skin and difficulty concentrating. Some studies have even shown an increased risk of postpartum depression.

  • What was your TSH level? Between 1-3 is optimum for fertility, but a little higher is usually considered okay. I think there is a link between hypothyroidism and miscarriage, but prob only if your number is  pretty high, not just slightly elevated. My RE would not treat me with a # above 4, for all of the reasons mentioned above. I did have a friend miscarry about 13 weeks, due to an undetected thyroid problem. She had to be on meds for a year after that, but now she has a healthy baby.

  • I am just beginning with this too. My results came back 7.1 which isn't too bad at all, but re wants me medicated. I go in on Tuesday to talk about it and get my script. So my RE finds it necessary even slightly elevated for me to be treated.

I don't know what I will betaking yet or how much. I read some people don't treat unless you're over 10, but I think they were speaking of the average person not one trying to get pregnant.

Actually 7.1 is considered to be high. Slightly elevated would be 3.5 or 4. My pcp was concern when mine was 4.5, which was actually a good number for me b/c it has been as high as 7.9.

So is this something that you stay medicated on for the rest of your life? I know I get to ask all these questions on Tuesday when I go to the RE to discuss. Also my RE went ahead with fertility meds and TTC this cycle even though I won't be on thyroid meds till Tuesday and I am 8DPO now. Not that I think I was lucky or anything : (  Is this normal?
