? for those w/ spotting in early pregnancy

I am from the first tri board, but figure I will get more answers posting this question on the other tri boards.

For those who had spotting in early pregnancy and have gone on to have healthy pregnancies, at what week(s) did the spotting occur? How many days did it continue? And how frequently did it happen throughout the day?

I know your experiences don't have anything to do with what my outcome will be, but at the moment I'd like to hear some reassuring stories as I don't know what else to do to calm down a bit. I'm being proactive with my doctor, but still very worried, of course.

Thanks for answering.

Re: ? for those w/ spotting in early pregnancy

Hey, sweetie. First, try to remain calm, stress and frantic worry is bad for the little one...easier said than done, I know!

I had maybe two tablespoons of blood, bright red, then darker, over a 12-hour period. It was the end of my 7th week. I FREAKED OUT, as my midwife had mentioned that most natural miscarriages she sees are in weeks 6-7.

I was also on vacation at the time, on the other side of the planet from where I live, so obviously had had a long, stressful travel experience to get there. Then the bleeding happened within 24-hours of arriving.

    Super scary.

My midwife and GP later told me it probably was just from stress, and gave me an ultrasound at 10-weeks. I just had my 2nd tri. ultrasound too. Baby is perfect, and looks very comfy in there...it's a girl!

A little early bleeding is really common actually. Try to just stay calm, I'm sure your little one is hanging tough in there!

    God bless!

  • I had brown, every day from weeks 5 to 10.  It started after sex during week five, and stopped at the end of week 10.  I also took progesterone pills.

Did you start taking progesterone pills because of the spotting? Or were you already on them?

  • I had spotting from the beginning until week 12 or 13, I was seening an RE and then released to my OB, neither could find any cause for my spotting, and baby was bouncing around on the U/S. I had another scare around week 16 with some spotting/pink/red and my OB had me come in immeidately for an US and by the time I got there, the bleeding had stopped and baby was bouncing around on the US. Idid have to go and get a Rhogam shot becuase my blood type is A negative. My OB and RE think that I just have a sensitive cervix. Good luck honey, I know its super scary.

  • I started spotting at 4w exactly and it continued almost daily until 10w. It was always pink or red but no clots or heavy flow. In fact, none of it even came out of me; I just saw it when I checked, sort of how you might check cervical mucus when TTC. I never had any pain with it (aside from what I figured were normal growing pains) and I'm assuming most of the bleeding was just cervical. The bleeding at 4w was when my period was due and it was very much like just-before-flow-starts spotting, which was terrifying, but it didn't continue like that.

I was never put on progesterone and I was told my levels were fine. I did get the Rhogam shot at around 5 weeks because my blood is AB- and I don't know my husband's type.

  • I had a few days of brown spotting then some bright red at 6 weeks. The bright red (not "gushing", but more than the brown spotting had been, it was a decent amount that drained into the toilet when I went to the bathroom one time) prompted me to go to the ER. But everything has been fine since then.

  • Thanks for the replies so far, ladies!

I have been in to the OB. They did an transvaginal ultrasound. I'm only in the 4th week, so of course it's way to early to see anything with the baby. They did not see any active bleeding, though. My hcg was in an appropriate range and today I go back to have that tested again to make sure the numbers are doubling.

I've already had some brown spotting this morning, so it's the 4th day of it. Makes me feel better to know that others had spotting that lasted more than a few days. I was thinking it should have stopped by now or else it must be on it's way to getting worse. But it is not getting any heavier. A panty liner is enough. It mostly comes in the morning and then a bit in the evening. It's either very watery brown or flaky brown. Hoping it goes away soon and doesn't come back. My first week of knowing I'm pregnant has already been stressful because of this.  Hope my numbers look good today.

  • Well spotting is super common, esp. if you are so early as your ticker. It could be implantation bleeding etc. have you spoken to your doctor?

This time round I didn't have any spotting early on, but at our 9 week ultrasound they found a hematoma (she described it as being like a bruise in the lining) from a vanishing twin (gestational sac that didn't develop) and a small one at the implant site. I had 1 day in the 10th week with some very faint brown spotting for a few wipes and then 1 day with 2 wipes of small red spotting. But I had monitoring ultrasounds every week until 12.3 weeks and the baby was fine and they were gone by 11.5 weeks.

Im 15 weeks now and nothing since...the baby has been fine at all ultrasounds, good heartbeat etc. I also just heard the heartbeat again at 13.5 days at my last appointment. So..it doesn't always end badly.

    Talk to you doc.

  • I had spotting between weeks about 5-6. It was brown, enough for me to have to wear a panty liner at all times, and constant for 7 days. This had nothing to do with intercourse.

Later on as we engaged in intercourse (after the initial spotting ended) I did bleed the first time. We soon found that using a water-based lubricant (recommended by my OB over oil-based) fixed that problem.

My OB ran blood tests while I was spotting to help ease my worries. As with most of the ladies here, if there's ever any fright or concern, call your OB.

I had bright red spotting at almost 7 weeks.  I went to the bathroom and when I wiped I saw it.  It obviously freaked me out and after talking to my OB office on the phone, they had me go in.  They checked me out and did an internal u/s and everything looked totally fine.  The spotting basically went away immediately and everything has been fine since then (no more spotting, healthy baby, etc).

I know seeing any kind of spotting is super scary, but it really can be very normal and not mean anything bad.  Good luck!

I had spotting at 3 weeks (could have been implantation bleeding), 5 weeks, 7 weeks, and 8.5 weeks.  At 3 and 5 weeks, it lasted about a day.  At 7 and 8.5 weeks, it lasted just during the evening/night.  All times I had bright red blood that looked like the start of my period.  Actually, I assumed the bleeding at 3 weeks was my period at first.

After my 8.5 week bleeding, I had a vaginal ultra sound, and we got to see that everything was okay and see the heartbeat.  That was so reassuring.  I didn't have any bleeding after that, fortunately.

I don't know exactly how far along you are, but if you're eating healthy for the most part and not drinking, smoking, and doing drugs, there's not much else you can do to prevent a miscarriage.  It's quite likely everything will be fine.

  • I had 1 day of brown spotting at 8w0d and one day at 9w0d. Just enough to cover a pantyliner (Also fair to note we did not have sex the previous day - as this I hear can somtimes irritate the cervix).

  • I know there are already a ton of answers to your questions, but the more the merrier in this circumstance (I know).

With my first LO, I spotted from week 1-24; most every day. It would stop for a day or two, and I'd be soooo relieved, and then it would come back. =( I would call my dr. and we would chat about it, or I would go into the clinic, but baby was always fine. My dr. explained that since there are so many blood vessels in the cervix (to help baby grow), they are just easily ruptured...Thankfully, baby doesn't live in the cervix, so if blood was/is coming from the cervix, it is not coming from baby.

With this baby, I had pretty bad spotting early on (enough that it freaked me out - even considering what I went through with my first pregnancy), when I went in to get checked, once again, everything was fine. Since then, I have had a couple instances after intercourse that I have spotted, but baby is healthy.

Try to stay calm. More people than we know [before we get pregnant] go through spotting. GL!

  • I had spotting every 9-10 days like clock work starting at 5 weeks to about 13 weeks.  Keep your head up.

  • Early in my pregnancy, I was told that spotting was normal, and so was cramping, but that I should call the doctor if they ever happened together... I had one or the other for quite a while from 6-8 weeks, but never both the same time/day. Then I had heavy spotting accompanied by bad menstrual-like cramps on a Friday when I was between 8-9 weeks. I called for reassurance, and my dr's office told me to come in.

It was too early for my OB to be able to hear the heartbeat on a doppler, so I had to wait an agonizing couple of days over the weekend until they could do a viability ultrasound the next Monday morning, all the while trying to be optimistic and not stress. I don't think I'll ever forget sitting in the waiting room Monday morning looking at a glowing, heavily pregnant woman waiting for her appointment and hoping, hoping, hoping that I would be lucky enough to make it to that stage.

My labs showed hcg high enough that my OB wasn't too worried, but the fact I had both bleeding & bad cramps, and I also was showing low progesterone were somewhat cocerning. I went on progesterone for the rest of my first trimester. I knew and my doctor reminded me that there's no proof out there that it can prevent miscarriage, but I was willing to do it if there was even the slightest chance it would help. I have no idea of it helped, but it didn't hurt things.

ETA: I just wanted to share my story because it shows that even the "red flag" combo of both bad cramping and heavy spotting can still be part of a viable pregnancy- though one should certainly check in with an OB if it does happen. Hoping everything turns out well for you.

  • I had a stream of pink blood at 10 weeks.  They found I had a subchorionic hematoma.  My gf had the same thing and she started spotting at 6 weeks.  She had clots and everything.  Both of our hematoma's have been absorbed into our baby and we are now fine with no bleeding or any other issues.  She is 4 weeks behind me.  Good Luck to you and your LO and wishing you a happy and healthy 9 months sweetie!

Oops, I meant absorbed into our bodies. LOL  (the bleed will either be absorbed or pass through).  I bled all the way to 15 weeks.

  • This is such a great post for any preg woman that is spotting - especially those who spot early and need this reassurance!

I spotted heavy brown & red at 7.5 weeks, light brown at 9 weeks, bright red at 11 weeks and light brown at 18 weeks.  I'm almost 20 weeks and everything is fine.

Others have mentioned this but yours could very well be implantation bleeding.  Don't be alarmed if this happens again a few weeks later from placenta implanation... as always... ask your doc.  They know more than we do.

When I spotted early I was certian I had miscarried and was devastated.  If I would have found a positive post like this I would have been so encouraged.  Dr. Google and reveiwing old posts can be very frightening.

I don't know enough about posting but if anyone can duplicate this thread on the first tri board I think that may help other newy pregnant ladies who are going through this too.

Thanks to everyone that took the time to post such encouraging info!

  • I'll add my 2 cents in here, as spotting can be concerning (and disconcerting) early on in pregnancy. I started spotting following intercourse at 9 weeks. When I wiped, there appeared to be a large blood clot, and lots of fresh red blood. I freaked out, as did my husband, and I called the answering service for my OB's office. When I spoke to the nurse, she told me to monitor the bleeding, see if I filled up a pad, and take it easy for the next day or so. After the initial fresh blood, every time I wiped it was light/dark brown, and barely covered a panty liner. I spotted for a couple of days, and then nothing after that. I'm at 20 weeks now, and the baby is active, kicking and we've had nothing but positive reports from every ultrasound and check-up. I hope you're encouraged, as spotting can occur (I think I'm like many of the PPs, that have a sensitive cervix), but hopefully seeing others' stories will help your nerves subside a bit! HTH and wishing you a healthy pregnancy!
  • Spotting is terrifying, but it doesn't always mean that something is horribly wrong. I spotted from 5 days before my BFP through 9-10 Weeks, then again at 13 and 15 Weeks. Initally (BFP-10 Weeks & 13 Weeks) it was caused from a subchorionic hematoma, which they saw on my first u/s at 7 Weeks. At 15 Weeks it was from sex so I was on pelvic rest for a long time. My progesterone was also extremely low initially, so I was on a progesterone supplement until 15 Weeks. T&P that everything works out for you & your LO!!

  • I have gone through spotting in three pregnancies, the first two sadly started right around where you are and ended in miscarriage.

This time my doctor put me on progesterone as soon as I got my BFP. I spotted around week 6, after being on it for two weeks. Turns out the progesterone was irritating my cervix and causing some light spotting which would occur every few weeks for about a day. Since I stopped the progesterone at week 12, I've had none.

I hope everything turns out well for you.

Same for me. After my ER ultrasound at 5.5 weeks, baby was fine (still is growing healthy and strong) however they did find asmall tear on the outside of my uterus. No sex, gym or anything strenuous for 6 weeks. It is very common in first pregnancies due to the streching of your insides. Every so often now I will still have pinkish discharge and worry but have been told several times, in some pregnancies its a normal thing. The best thing you can do is not stress over it...Trust me, I know its the hardest thing to do. I was told unless it bright red blood and enough to fill a pad, there is nothing they can do. Even if that is the case, they can only try to help you, they can't save the baby or try help in anyway until the baby is atleast 20 weeks old - even then the babies chance is 50/50.

I hope you have a healthy, strong, happy baby! Be positive, postive things happen for positive people. Good Luck momma!

  • I had brown and red spotting/bleeding from 5 to 7.5 weeks. Pretty much every day. It would start to taper off, then come back a bit heavier. I also went in for an early ultrasound at 5 weeks because I have had an etopic pregnancy before, and they said the sac was misshapen which could mean I would have a miscarriage. But, when I went back at 7 weeks, everything was fine. I soon stopped bleeding and I haven't really had any problems since (except my own worrying for no reason). They never really knew why I was bleeding, but probably just from when it attached to the uterine wall. Good luck!
