I posted last week about this and some of the ladies on here had great advice for patterns and websites to buy cloth. (I'm on my phone so I can't link it.) I ordered some PUL and fleece fabric and notions from Wazoodle fabrics. I also bought some cotton fabric and microfleece and some other notions from JoAnns fabrics. I tried my first diaper last night and it didn't come out very well but I didn't follow any instructions and I'm a pretty novice sewer. After I botched that first diaper, I watched some YouTube videos on how to sew cloth diapers and that helped a lot! Now I know what I did wrong!
My MIL is making most of ours. She started by reading and experimenting with the patterns from Babyville Boutique (from Joann Fabric and Hobby Lobby, I think), and she got her hands on an assortment of brand name diapers and covers (BG, FB, and a few other popular ones) to be models, since she hasn't used a cloth diaper since the early 70s.
I have a few wool sweaters that I felted and need to upcycle into soakers, since that sounds easier than sewing PUL.
My babies aren't here yet though, so I can't tell you how well it's working out.
I made some fitteds with openings for inserts out of old t-shirts. The only fabric I bought was microfleece to line the inside. The inserts are made from a terry cloth robe. They're not the prettiest things, but I'm ok with that since they'll just get covered in poo.
Due 12/20/11 ~ Lost our Muskrat at 9w2d
4/25/12 ~ Our angel, Persephone James, is here!
I made some diapers and covers using the darling diapers pattern. Some advice, don't make a lot of diapers before your LO comes. The nice thing about sewing your own is you can customize. My LO has skinny legs.
