How do you pronounce the "leigh" ending? (CLICKY)

There seems to be some dispute over the pronunciation in our family - some people seem to think it's pronounced LAY (as in the word "sleigh") while others insist it's pronounced LEE.

The name is Everly/Everleigh. So, if you saw this name, would you pronounce it Ever-LEE or Ever-LAY? Am I setting my daughter up for a lifetime of mispronunciation (and teasing) if I put "leigh" at the end of her name? I just want people to pronounce it correctly when it's read aloud....

(As an aside, I'm not a huge fan of ending a name that way, but DH is insisting on it there's only so much compromising we can do considering we don't have much time and there are no other names in contention - but honestly I'd rather just put a "Y" at the end and call it a day....)

  • I much prefer the ly spelling...

I know you were both REALLY struggling and your H was being a bit of a pain so I get it if he really won't budge.. Does he not like the ly cause your D is Finley (right?)

The ending of the names are quite similar.

Were there ANY other names you could get him to think about?? You haven't posted in a  while.

  • I think it's "Lee" (like the name Ashleigh/Ashley). But it will be confusing to some. And I think Everly is so unique and pretty as it is...you really don't need to dress it up with fancy spelling. Smile IMHO

  • I would pronounce Everleigh as ever-lee.

Considering the struggles you've had getting your H to do any sort of compromise, then i'd be okay letting him have the -leigh ending. A small price to pay to avoid naming your daughter Rooney! ;)

Yeah, the reason he doesn't like the "LY" ending is because our DD is Finnley, and he thinks they're too similar. But I think they're similar no matter how it's spelled, because the majority of the time, when the names are compared, it's going to be out loud, not on paper.

Honestly, the "matchiness" doesn't bother me all that much, since they're going to be "Finnley and Everly" for a relatively small portion of their lives, and beyond that will be individuals with their own lives and happenings.

    But to answer your question, no, there are no other names he'll consider beyond Everly. He is still pushing (hard) for Rooney or Newton. {{shudder}}

  • Oh MY! In that case, I'd go with Everleigh! Indifferent

  • I don't like the -leigh ending, but in your case it is definitely the lesser of the evils! So it doesn't matter to him that when the two names are said out loud the endings sound the same anyway?

  • My name is Leigh, pronounced LEE.  People sometimes mis-pronounce and call me Lay or Leah, but for the most part they get it right.

  • Spell it Everly. Everleigh looks like you're trying to hard, seeing as how a semi-popular trend is sticking -eigh in for any -ee sound.

  • I pronounce it 'lay' in my head, die a little inside... but still know to say 'lee' out loud.

  • At the end of a name, or as a stand alone, Lee. At the beginning, like Leighton, then I'd say Lay.

  • I voted for other because I'm not sure.  I would probably ask the person for clarification of how to pronounce the name.
  • Leigh is a common spelling for the feminine version of Lee.  I don't think it's outlandish or so unique that people would mispronounce it.

    This exactly.

My middle name is Leigh and I've never heard it pronounced any other way except "LEE."

  • I know it's supposed to be "lee," but I always, ALWAYS think "lay" and have to correct myself.

When names are spelled with "leigh" I also kind of mentally stumble over them. I find those spellings very clunky and awkward; I think they suck the attractiveness and grace right out of a name's look.
