how to transition to a toddler bed

So do I just do it Friday night or Saturday night?  Is there any particular way to ease into it, or should I just go cold turkey?

We're just removing the front piece of her crib, and we got a general toddler bed crib rail, so it shouldn't seem all that different to DD.  Her birthday is this weekend, so should we just present it to her as a gift and make a big deal about it infront of our family at her family party?

Re: how to transition to a toddler bed

  • We just moved Jacob a couple of months ago, but to a full size bed.  (His birthday is on Monday!)  We just did it.  We talked about it for about a week ahead of time and then Saturday morning, we just did it.  I figured that if he didn't nap because of the new bed, he would be super tired by the evening.  And he's done amazingly well with the move.  He still takes naps and sleeps the same, if not longer, than he used to.  He doesn't get out of bed and still calls for us, but he knows how to get in and out of the bed.  He just doesn't do it!  Amazing!

Good luck with the transition!  Jacob was great and I hope your DD is too!

  • If you're removing the front of the crib and adding a half rail it shouldn't be such a big deal.  Let your DD watch the process!
  • we talked it up. we told him that he is a big boy. We didnt tell him he could climb out and I didnt let him climb in. I wanted to keep him from wandering at night

It worked for another 6 months, Now he gets up whenever, but it was nice to know that he stayed there for a while
