I'm new here and am really looking for some advise as to what to expect. My son will be two in a week and has been in speech therapy for about three months. His SLP says that it's still a little early to officially dx him with apraxia, but she's pretty confident that he has it. My major concern is that it may more than just apraxia. (namely Autism) It's so difficult to tell what "quirks" I should be concerned about and which ones are Apraxia related. Any advise or stories would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!!
Re: apraxia
If your son has some red flags for autism, I would definitely set up an appointment with a developmental pedi. It will either confirm your thoughts or put your mind at ease.
My DS was speech delayed (still is, but SOOOO much better) and has food texture issues. He had a few red flags so we set up an appointment. When we made the appointment, we were thinking the worse. By the time his appointment came, he had made so much progress that we were almost certain he was not autistic. I am still glad we had the evaluation because it did put our minds at ease. They thought for sure he was not autistic. It really helped us move on and really focus on his issues instead of wondering what if.
My DS has been in speech and OT therapy for a little over a year. He wasn't saying a word when he started and wasn't even communicating in any way. Now, he is saying SO much and talks non-stop! It has made a world of difference in my little boy!
I hope this helps!
