Can I fit 3 carseats in a Honda Accord?

We are due with our third in August and we currently have a minivan and an accord.  We were planning on buying a new car but I really don't want to!  My husband and I work opposite shifts so whoever has the kids takes the van and whoever works takes the Accord.  However, there are rare times when we are left with the opposite car.  Right now, the girls are never in the Accord but we keep carseats in there for emergency purposes.  The Accord is paid off, in great shape, and we get great gas mileage on it so I don't want to get rid of it.

So, in the fall, we'll have a newborn, 4 year old (guessing 35 lbs), and 6 year old (guessing close to 50 lbs).  What can I do?  I would consider using just a booster for the 6 year old since she'd rarely be in this car and never for long trips.

I don't mind buying all new carseats since that will be far cheaper than buying a new car!

  • DH has an Accord and we have 2 Britax Marathons in there...there is no way to get another carseat in between those 2.  You would need some really slim seats to fit 3 across.

I know, we have an Evenflo Triumph and a Graco Nautalis and there's no way we could fit a third but the seats are so big.  I'm wondering if I could do an infant seat, booster, and a radian seat.  Or something like that!

I'm sure I'm crazy- just trying to avoid buying a new car (which I hate!).

  • I think what's hard here is that with a 6 yo, likely in a booster, it's a pain to try to click in the seatbelt in between the booster and whichever seat is next to it.

  • You should be able to get three seats in an accord without too much trouble, you  just need the right seats. We've comfortably gotten three across my MILs civic many times, so an accord shouldn't be difficult. For the six year old you could definitely do a booster. The absolute smallest one is a bubble bum, which basically is the size of the child (it's a great backup seat to keep in backpacks or with the kid anyway). Here's a successful 3 across thread from car-seat.org:

  • Have you tried the Diono car seats? They are slim. My friend has an HHR and can fit 3 of those.  You should look into them. Diono also makes a booster seat.

The diono booster seat is not narrow, just an FYI. I'm pretty sure the narrowest high back booster is the britax parkway.

  • We have two cars that we squeeze 3 car seats across. The youngest was in a Snugride while the other two were in Sunshine kids Radians (higher car seats kind of ride above the edge of the Radians). She is now in a Britax (I forget which one, we have 3 different ones) and we have a Graco highbacked booster and a Radian in that car. It is the Radians that allow us to have 3 across. They are narrower. In the other car we have another Radian and the other two Britaxes that we were using when we only needed two car seats. I keep meaning to pull one out and put in a booster because the 7 yo is way to big for it (this is our car that the kids hardly ever ride in).
