Best Baby Carrier? Multi-positions

I'm looking for the best baby carrier out there that allows me to carry my newborn on my chest (both towards me or facing out) or on my back. I'd really prefer something that has great lower back support too.

I'm on the fence between the Ergo and the Becco Baby Carriers. I'm pretty sure the Ergo doesn't let you carry your baby on your back, or allow the baby to face out though.

I'll have a newborn and a two year old so I really want something that will survive constant use but also be comfortable for me to wear.

Any favorites out there?

  • I have an ergo and love it. It does work as a back carrier as well as a hip position carrier. You do have to have a special insert for a newborn though. I used a moby for my newborn and then moved to the ergo when he was about 4 months and I no longer needed the insert. I have read that facing out is actually really not good for baby because of alignment and overstimulation or something like that. You should ask over on the attachment parenting board. There are lots of babywearing mamas over there. GL.

  • I have an ergo and love it. You cant wear baby facing out, but that's generally not recommended anyway. You can do a high back carry and give LO the same view though.

With the ergo you can do a hip carry, back carry, high back carry, and front carry. It's really awesome.

This! Love my Ergo! It's good for toddlers too. I've worn my 19 month old on my hip and my back before. I've also been carrying my DS in the front position for months now and just carried him on my back today. It's a really awesome carrier and well worth the $. I wish I had only bought this and not our double stroller. I tend to use the Ergo and our single stroller much more often.
  • I love my Becco Butterfly II.  The Becco is easy to get the baby on your back and also has a built in infant insert.  I know that several places have rentals so you can actually try out the carrier.  I strongly suggest this.  I have an Ergo that I bought because everyone raves but it just didn't work for my body type.  I then bought the Becco and am so much happier with that.  I know granolababies.com and paxbaby.com both have rental programs.  Also if you're interested I am selling my excellent used condition Ergo Sport for $70.  It is light blue.

  • We love our Moby and our Ergo (as everyone else already said). With my son I didn't feel comfortable with him on my back in any carrier until 8-9 months when I knew his neck was plenty strong and I trusted myself to get him on there.

Personally my favorite right now is a ring sling (Maya Wrap). I never liked it with my son and it does have a learning curve, but I like it better than the Moby because of easy in/out and better than the Ergo right now because it's just more snuggly.

I also tried on a Mei Tei once and it wasn't as comfortable for me as the Ergo, but I liked that it was ties so it was easily adjusted, could fit multiple people. I also liked that the bottom of the seat could be cinched together to be narrower. That allows it to be more comfortable for smaller babies and also theoretically they could face out (though as PP said, it's not recommended).

Check out natural parenting type stores and see if they will let you try some on with your baby to see what you like.
