~*~DE/DEmbryo/GC Check-in~*~

This group is open to anyone who has already gone through donor egg/donor embryo/gestational carrier, is in the process of it, or plans on doing it in the future.

This check-in posted each Tuesday.  If you?d like to be added to this group, please reply to this message, and I?ll make sure to add you for next week.  Welcome to the lurkers!  We know this can be a difficult journey, but we welcome you with open arms.  Let us know if we can answer any questions.

GRADUATES ARE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED TO POST!

FACEBOOK GROUP: Yellow_Daisy has restarted a PRIVATE Facebook group (meaning no one can see it in your feed, that you are a member, etc.) for the ladies from IF and SAIF who are using/have used donor eggs/embryos or donor sperm.  If you would like to join, please page Yellow_Daisy and ask for an invite to the group.  This might be a nice way to keep in touch in a more private setting and address issues that may arise down the road.

***** If you are a donor or interested in donating, we would be happy to answer questions.  Please start a new post with ?Question for DE ladies? as the title. *****

Status Update: Where are you currently with the DE/DEmbryo/

GC process?   We had a great anatomy scan on 3/5. We're having a GIRL!!! :)

QOTW: What financial options have you found for DE/DEmbryo/GC? Any suggestions or ideas for how people can afford these treatments?  We weren't able to find any other than a very very generous family member. I wish I had suggestions that could help others!

Sorry it's been so long since I've checked in - I just keep missing it!

Status Update: Where are you currently with the DE/DEmbryo/

GC process?   All our testing is done and our donor is flying out on 3/20 for her psych and medical screenings.  Fingers crossed all goes well!  I will be starting BCPs on 3/25.

QOTW: What financial options have you found for DE/DEmbryo/GC? Any suggestions or ideas for how people can afford these treatments?  We have taken full advantage of our FSA accounts that will reimburse for expenses that are not covered by insurance including donor fees, agency fees, attorney fees, donor meds, etc.  We maxed out our accounts last year and this year and as long as we incurred the expense by 3/15 (which we have) we will be reimbursed around $8000 pre-tax.  Definitely something to look into!

Hoping all is well with everyone!!

Status Update: Our ET was Monday 3/12, and we transferred two beautiful blasts! Beta 3/23. Anxiously awaiting and basically freaking out every moment. 3 embies were able to be frozen in case we need them (fx not for a long time!) in the future. Appt. this coming Friday to check my hormone levels.

QOTW: Our financial options were zilch. We paid all out of pocket. Insurance covered a lot of our medications, but that's about it. Suggestions are just to make it a priority. We didn't look into a lot of the fertility financing companies because frankly we could get better rates on credit cards with companies we already had relationships with. We're now working hard to pay it off. DH is allergic to debt :)  I know a lot of places have different programs with shared cycles and such, but I have no experience with them and don't know how it works or if it's worth it.

Good luck to everyone cycling or just about to cycle!

    Status Update: Nothing new... sigh.

QOTW: We're OOP and we're going to deplete our savings. My only suggestion is to look into multiple programs because there are such huge differences, but know in advance that there's always compromises to be made between what you want $$-wise and what you want for mental/emotional and physical reasons....

    TTC #1 since June 2010
    Me: 36, DH: 42
    Dx: DOR and MFI

DH: low count + very low motility; hormones all normal; Sperm DNA Frag. test = poor to fair; male karyotyping normal
Me: FSH 13.4 + AMH 0.26 + hypothyroidism; Scratch the hypothyrodism (?); Blood clotting and immune panel all negative; endometrial biopsy normal

    IVF #1 (MDLF - Jul/Aug 2011): BFN (9R, 5M, 3F with ICSI, 3dt of 1 10-cell grade 2, no frosties)
    IVF #2 (EP-antagonist - Sep/Oct 2011): BFN (6R, 4M, 3F w/ ICSI, 3dt of 1 6-cell, 1 7-cell, grade 4s, no frosties)
    DE IVF #1 (shared cycle - June 2012): c/p (6R, 6F w/ICSI, 3dt 1 8-cell grade A- and 1 7-cell grade A-; no frosties)

status update: We are scheduled for ET on Saturday!  Praying the luck o the Irish is with us.  We received 4 eggs from our donor on Monday.(we are in a 1:3 program).  As of today all 4 are growing! I started PIO on Sunday, not fun, but ok so far.  DH is great at administration!

financial options: We are in a shared risk guarantee program at SG. We financed with Fertility Finance.  They were very helpful. If this doesn't work (we get 6 attempts) we get all our money back.  If it does work.......well you just can't put a price on that can you?

    sending good thoughts to all!!

We were matched with our donor last week ??. I am starting my mock cycle tomorrow too.

QOTW: I am lucky enough to have insurance that will cover the medical aspects od DE. We are going to take money out of savings for the donor fee, testing required by fDA for donor, donor insurance, and coordination fee.

Good luck to those getting ready to or already cycling!!

So I have been all over FB with my woes.  I am currently getting all my paperwork, documents and appts set to cycle with RBA.  We are excited and hope we can cycle by mid May.

QOTW: We are OOP which is why I don't want to do a fresh cycle.  For me I have a really difficult time using our savings.  We are very fortunate that we receive pretty large annual bonuses and use that money to pay for treatments.

I am AMA and all tests on H came back normal
3 failed IVF with OE and 2 failed frozen DE cycles
Last fresh hail mary DE cycle starting Feb 2013

GL to those with upcoming betas, that's very exciting!

Update: We were recently matched with some donor embryos and today I made the call saying we would take 2 of the 3 lots offered to us. So now I wait for a callback and once I get that I will have to go get various tests done and then wait for a schedule.

QOTW: We didn't want to finance any fertility treatment so that's why we've opted for donated embryos. It's a lot more affordable for us, and since DH has azoospermia too, we'd need donor eggs and donor sperm so it makes sense. You give up a lot of "customization" I guess you could say but it's so much less expensive. I get a nice end of year bonus, so last year we put a chunk of that into savings and maxed out the FSA account. My insurance doesn't cover procedures but does cover 50% of meds and a good portion of treatment, up to a $10k lifetime max, which, amazingly, we're reaching the end of.

Update:  Moving forward with RBA; hoping to cycle as early as late April!

QOTW:  I have some pretty fantastic insurance coverage for IF, but even that will only pay for my portion of a DE cycle.  It would pay for any FETs.   For the OOP portion, we're paying with savings; we have always lived below our means and saved 30-50% of our after-tax income (DH even did this in college!).  To do this, we drive our (bought used) Toyotas or Hondas until they die, we bought a house well below what the finance company said we could "afford", we only replace things like phones or computers when they actually break and never buy the latest technology.  Big vacations are rare; we usually just go to a low-key beach in the off-season.

Status Update: Where are you currently with the DE/DEmbryo/

GC process? No big changes this week except I'm up to 4 estrogen patches today, and I start Estrace tablets tomorrow night.  I've had a lot of EWCM the past couple of days, which I assume is from the estrogen.  Is this normal?  I go in for monitoring b/w and u/s on Friday to check my lining.  DER and my ET should be sometime next week!

QOTW: What financial options have you found for DE/DEmbryo/GC? Any suggestions or ideas for how people can afford these treatments? We did a combination of insurance, some savings and a low interest credit card.

Update: Not too much to report, except that I got Baby Bargains and also the book Baby 411 in the mail today.  Read for a while, got completely overwhelmed by Baby411, and said to DH, "I can't have a baby -- it's too complicated!" I guess if other people can figure this out....

QOTW: We went with the shared risk program at SG too; that meant we paid more than we would have if we had stayed local, but we needed the financial reassurance of the guarantee; we couldn't handle the one-shot, no-guarantee risk.  We tried to get a home equity loan but couldn't qualify for one, so we took out a 5-yr personal loan from our credit union.  We would have had a similar interest rate and more payment flexibility with our credit cards, but we were warned that that debt would count more against us for getting a home loan down the line.  Of course, I've learned that because of that loan payment, we probably can't afford to move anyway, but we still like the fixed plan of the loan. We have some family help lurking in the background if we really need it, as well as a gift to apply to the principal that I just haven't sent in yet (sort of waiting for the birth, just in case). I wish I had more ideas; being OOP just sucks.

In my DE adventure, I learned something pretty quickly. Everything is negotiable. I negotiated the agency fees, donor fees, even the hospital fees. Explained to hospital that it was all out of pocket and they shaved 30% off the surgical room fees and anesthesia. I ended paying quite a bit, but had I not negotiated, I would have paid literally thousands more. (about $5,000) Another option is Donor embryo. The cost is probably the lowest of all IVF procedures. I wish I had ventured into this option a lot more. If you would adopt a baby, then carrying an adopted one is an even greater opportunity. There is minimal cost when compared to donor eggs. So many clinics have lists of donor embryos just waiting to be adopted.I may have several very soon. I will not charge anyone for them, although I will be very particular in the selection of the parents.

Status Update:  Hit 28 week yesterday and doing ok.  A bit tired and swollen but working with it.  Want these babes to keep cooking til at least 36 weeks.

SO excited for everyone about to cycle or cycling.  Good luck!

QOTW: What financial options have you found for DE/DEmbryo/GC? Any suggestions or ideas for how people can afford these treatments?

We were OOP so used 0% CC and some savings.  I really wanted at least 1/4 to be paid in cash.  So savings.

Update- We had our consult at Advanced Fertility and it went well.  Would like to cycle this summer, possibly June or July.  Trying to decide between the single cycle and their guarantee program.  RE admitted that with their success rates the guarantee program does not come out ahead for most couples......but, what if we are not one of the lucky couples that get a BFP on first try.  I think that all our failed IVFs with our OE is effecting our judgment about what to do here, and I'm not at all sure that that is at all warranted.  Only other program that we seriously considered is Shady Groves shared program.  Just thinking that traveling for DE IVF is not something that we want to do.  Love the QOTW, as this has been an ongoing discussion in our home recently.

QOTW-We have decided to borrow from our 401k, deplete much of our savings, cancelled second week of a 2 week vacation and will somehow finance the rest.  I am planning to take overtime at work when offered over next several months.  Considering the finance company that RE uses, or maybe a loan from Prosper.com, or maybe a zero interest cc.  We have not told family that we are planning to do de IVF, so borrowing from family is not an option for us.
