Has anyone had an amnio? After my NT results, I am debating doing an amnio.
What influenced your decision to do the amnio?
How was your experience with the actual procedure?
How long did it take to get your results back?
I probably have more questions, but can't think of off hand. Please feel free to add anything else!
Thanks!
Re: Amnio anyone?
I would do it if my results came back poor. My doctor said that there's almost no risk of a miscarriage and it's not high enough to worry about if I wanted to know before.
I would do it so that I was able to be prepared and prepare my friends and family. Join a support group and research different parenting methods.
I had one after getting back really good NT Scan numbers because I am older, and because the NT Scan can only pick up about 85% of the problems that are tested for, and not all genetic issues can be observed visually or with bloodwork.
The procedure itself was no big deal at all. We went to a center that specializes in amnio, which I highly recommend. They had a genetic counselor who met with us extensively, as well as excellent overall risk numbers (they lose about 1:1500). I liked that my doctor and genetic counselor had both had the procedure done during their own pregnancies, mostly because that reassured me that it was safe and that they knew what they were talking about.
The actual procedure took less than 2 minutes, and was uncomfortable but not painful. I got FSH results in three days and final results in 13 days. Fortunately everything came back great for us.
As I always say to these questions, this is very personal, and what was right for me is not right for everyone. I had a particularly good experience, and I just want you to know that those can exist even though it's always scary to do anything that carries risk. Good luck!
Thanks everyone... We still don't know what we are going to do. I have a call in to the doctor's office to find out if they offer the MaterniT21 test. After doing some reading, that would be ideal. I would comfortable if that came back as negative. But, since the doctor''s office didn't mention it to begin with, I am thinking they probably don't offer it. I should hear back tomorrow. If the test is not an option, I think the plan is to schedule the genetic counseling and amnio. After the genetic counseling, I can opt not to do the amnio. I am leaning towards to not doing it, but it would really help to talk to someone who is very knowledgeable about all of it first before making a final decision!
Thanks again.
I don't want to scare your pants off, but we did become that statistic. 1 week after having our procedure done, our daughter was born into heaven. She did have low amniotic fluid and that played a huge role in the outcome, but I would hate to see someone else go through the pain we did.
I am so sorry for your loss. I appreciate your input. I have been leaning away from the amnio, and this makes me think about it even more.
