I once returned some shredded parmasean cheese.  We had bought it a long time before and barely used any.   Those things have long expiration dates.   This ones date was Oct 2008.   Well, I went to use some once in August, and it had a few shreds in there with mold starting.   I asked at the store the next time I went and the lady told me to bring it back for a new one.  

In the olden days, I would have just tossed it.  But with the cost of everything going up last summer - no way in hell was I tossing it.
