Cloth Diapering

Help, My diapers stink!

I apologize in advance as I KNOW this has been asked a million times but I did a search but came up with nothing.  I have been CD'ing my son for 8 months using pockets and prefolds with covers and up until now have had no problem with stink.

My diapers officially STINK!  I have a front loading washing machine and do a rinse and spin with an extra rinse, no detergent.  Then run a "normal" cycle with an extra rinse again using two tablespoons of crunchy clean detergent  I air dry, weather permitting, or dry the inserts in the dryer.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

Sincerely,

Stinky butt baby boy :)

Re: Help, My diapers stink!

  • You didn't say what type of stink.  If it is a pee smell, you most likely have buildup on your diapers and need to strip them.  If it is a barnyard smell, your diapers are just not getting clean, more detergent, longer washing cycle.

Since i have a front loader too, I use a quick wash with extra rinse for my "prerinse" that way the diapers are hit with water three times, and select no spin.  That weights down the diapers with water to get a heavier load for the wash cycle so you will get more water in to do the washing. I would also recommend you switch your wash cycle to heavy duty if you have that option on your HE. -

  • I know I ask this every time someone says they have stink, but-- do you have hard water?

And do the diapers stink (and I'm talking about barnyard stink, not ammonia) out of the washer, or do they smell clean and only stink after being peed in? If they smell clean and only stink after being peed in, it doesn't necessarily mean you're not using enough detergent. You may just have detergent buildup, which can happen from using too much detergent (tricky, right?).

But it if you have hard water, you could be using the right amount of detergent and still be getting buildup because the minerals in your water are keeping the detergent from rinsing out properly. If you think this might be your problem, I would recommend stripping, and then either trying a new detergent or adding Calgon water softener to your current detergent.

Hope you get it figured out soon! Stink is so frustrating.

  • Thank you ladies.  They don't stink out of the wash they only stink (pee pee ammonia smell) after he has been wearing them for a bit and has peed.  We do have very hard water so I bet that is a problem.  What is the best way to strip them?  Sorry I've never done it before :)

I found a plain old hot water strip to work the best.  Just do lots of washes with HOT water, nothing else.  It will help flush out any excess detergent.

Good luck!  I dealt with bad ammonia stink for awhile.  Tiny Bubbles detergent is what finally kicked it for me!

As a hard water survivor, I agree. Try a hot overnight soak, then a few hot washes. It should dissolve the buildup without needing to strip. Then you'll need to adjust your wash routine. I really think Tide and a softener (borax or calgon) works best with really hard water.
