2nd Trimester

Low Lying Placenta (Placenta Previa)

I was just informed by my doctor that I have a low lying placenta.  It was discovered during my 18 week ultrasound.

I am being sent for another ultrasound in 9 weeks to see if it's moved.

Is anyone else going through this or has anyone else gone through this and can share their experience?

The doctor said it's still early but I'm a bit freaked out!

Re: Low Lying Placenta (Placenta Previa)

  • I was told I had a low placenta at 15 weeks.  At my 19 week u/s it had moved up.  My understanding is that most of the time it moves, but I was definitely all worked up when I first heard about it.

ETA: I was put on restrictions (no exercise or sex) but everything has been lifted now that it has moved.

  • I had this with my first. It usually moves by itself. I was put on pelvic rest, and no working out... I was high risk as well. Mine ended up moving but not enough, so to be safe I went with the c section.
  • I had it with DD and it moved out of the way in plenty of time. I was told after my last u/s I have again. Not really anything to be concerned about just yet.

  • I had it with DS and it had moved out of the way by the next u/s. Luckily the placenta looked fine this time around.

  • I was told I had this and will be going back for a u/s on the 23rd to see if it has moved up.  The doctor said it is very common and she wasn't worried about it yet.  She said that in most cases they move up on their own.  If it has not moved I will be put on restrictions such as no sex.  No clue what other restrictions at this time.

Also, my SIL had it as well and is due next month.  Hers has moved away and she will have no problems delivering vaginally.

I was told I have a low lying placenta at my A/S on Friday, but my OB didn't say anything about restrictions..now I'm worried!  Tongue Tied

I wasn't told about any restrictions either. I asked a few days later (when I realized other women had been advised against certain activity) and my doctor told me to go on living my life as usual (sex, working out, etc) unless I see blood.

To OP, don't worry. I flipped out a little when I was told at my 20wk u/s that I had low-lying placenta. The doctor and the u/s technician were very reassuring and told me it was nothing to worry about right now, that there's an excellent chance it will move.

  • I was told at 8 weeks I had it, but that it would likely correct itself.  As the Uterus expands it usually pulls the placenta up out of the way of the Cervix.  If it doesn't correct itself it is guaranteed that you will have a c-section.  My doctor didn't put any restrictions on for me yet, just told me to be careful and if I start spotting, that I should have pelvic rest.  He will be checking at my 16 week appointment to see if there have been any changes.

  • Thanks everyone for the great advice!  My doctor didn't seem concerned but after reading good ol' google I started freaking out.

I'll just hope everything looks fine in 9 weeks!

  • I have it too, but I'm not really concerned for pretty much the same reasons everyone else has talked about.  I'm not supposed to lift anything super heavy, but that's because of work purposes - no other restrictions were told to me.  Hang in there! :)

  • First and foremost, do NOT freak out this early with this...

I was told at my 20 week appointment, and by the time I was around 27 weeks or so, it was completely gone.

It can be very scary at first, but in most cases, it will resolve itself.

    GL and keep us posted!

I posted about this last week :)   I'm glad I'm not the only one that didn't get any restrictions!  That scared me when I read other people talking about that.  At my 20 week ultrasound I was told I had low lying placenta and the only things the doc said is normally it fixes itself and she didn't say anything about no sex or no exercise or any kind of restrictions. I have another ultrasound at 28 weeks to check it again

  • I was told I had this at around 12 or 13 weeks.  My last appointment was at 19weeks and it's still "low" but not previa anymore.

Also, I was talking to a friend who apparently had this much later in pregnancy and it still moved in time for delivery.

don't sweat it. you'll be fine.

  • I found out I had a low lying placenta at my ultrasound at 17 weeks.  I was really freaking out as well as some things you read online make it sound pretty scary! I kept waiting for something to happen like bleeding, but luckily everything has been fine.  I was not put on any restrictions, but I am now going to to see the OB every two weeks because I also have preexisting high blood pressure so with the two issues they wanted more frequent check ups.  I will have an ultrasound next week to see if it has moved.  The only benefit is that you do get an extra ultrasound to check the location of the placenta which I don't believe you would get otherwise unless there were complications.

  • I just had my follow up u/s done, and the previa which was diagnosed at 18 weeks was gone now (at 21 weeks).  It moves as your belly expands, so the more your baby grows, the better the likelyhood it'll move for you.  :)

  • I have this, too, and I'm currently 24 weeks.  It's early still, so it will probably correct itself.  Try not to worry and stay away from google!
