Ameda purely yours or Medela?

Recently my friend told me about Ameda Purely Yours and Purely yours Ultra breast pumps.  There is a bit of a price difference in the 2 and i'm wondering how it compares to Medela pumps since they are so popular.  This will be my 1st electric pump purchase, so I just wanted to hear some opinions on it.  I've read great reviews for both.  The thing I like about Ameda is the closed system and the price.  TIA for your suggestions/opinions. :)

Re: Ameda purely yours or Medela?

  • 3rd baby, but 1st time BFing {wasn't able with my other two.}  Anyway, after doing some research and talking to a lot of BFing friends, I'm going with the Medela In Style Advanced pump.

ETA: Also, check with your insurance b/c a lot of them cover the cost of a pump up to $300!

    I love my Medela PISA.

This. I've never tried another brand though.

Same here. I like the idea of a closed system as well though. Sounds like you might be able to find one used because of the closed system and that would cut costs significantly.

  • My LC recommended the Medela PISA.  She said the Ameda Purely Yours was decent and the only one I should consider besides the Medela, but they still recommend the Medela.  I got a PISA and am very happy with it.  I second checking with your insurance, mine doesn't cover them under any circumstances, but some do.

  • The commercially available pumps are fine, but you cannot beat a hospital-grade rental.  If that is an option for you (availability and financially), I urge you to consider it.

  • I used the Ameda- and it worked great- no complaints. It was a good pump especially for the price.  I found a good online deal that also included 12 bottles and a cooler, ice packs and a carrying case for way cheaper than Medela.

  • The breastfeeding consultants from the Mom's place I visit recommend the APY because it is a closed system. The Medela's tubes have a chance of getting moldy, while the APY doesn't have that chance.

  • My APY has done just fine for us. I don't tote it around, so I didn't need a special bag, cooler pack, etc. I think the toting extras are what make the MPIS so popular. Ameda is a closed system, which means you can go used or sell yours later. (Albiet, I would only buy used or sell on that has just been lightly used. The motors on home-grade pumps just simply are not meant for many years heavy use).
  • Thank you Ladies.  I think I will do the APY.  So excited! :)
