Did anyone go into labor while at work?

FTM here and I plan on working until my EDD (or later!), basically work until something happens.  I keep asking the OB and she says to keep on working.

Was anyone at work when they started the early stages of labor? I'm assuming I will be able to drive? Early labor lasts about 6-12 hrs and I'm about 10 miles from my house, even less to the hospital.

  • I was in labor all day at work when my son was born. Had painful contractions and back pain and pressure. Punched out at 5:15, drove half hour home, struggled to change clothes and get dd to the neighbors. Had contractions all be way home and it sucked. I had ds at 7:15. He was almost born in the car. I should not have been at work.

Whoa! How long were you at the hospital before you started pushing? That's cutting it close!

  • I did not, but a couple of my coworkers did.  They only worked a couple of hours after feeling regular contractions and were able to drive themselves to the hospital from work.

  • I didn't realize it was labor until after I went home at lunch time.  I was able to drive myself home from work.  DH came home and off we went.  DD1 was born at 1724 hrs that night, so about 5 hours after I left work.

  • I went into labor on a Thursday night, went to work Friday and had contractions all day. I left an hour early so I wouldn't get stuck in traffic while in labor. My contractions were timeable but not super painful most of the day, I pretty much told them I'd see them in 3 months when I left that day.

As soon as I walked into my house they got painful and I went to the hospital about 5 hours later. DS was born on Saturday around lunchtime.

I think the best thing I did was go to work that day, it kept my labor going because I was moving around and doing my normal routine but I didn't dwell on it because I was so busy trying to tie things up. It made it seem pretty short even though it lasted a couple of days:)

  • I started early labor on a Thursday at 9:00 AM while at work.  I wasn't sure if it was the "real deal" or not, but I timed them all day.  (I still have the sticky note with the times sitting on my desk).  I worked the entire day and by the time I left at 4:30 the contractions were 12-15 minutes apart.

I rode the bus home from work that day and it was soooo uncomfortable (all the bumps, strangers squished into the seats)! I think I would have been OK driving early that day, but by 5 or 6 PM I would not have been fine to drive.  I labored at home for a long time, went to the hospital at midnight, he was born at 5:55 AM Friday.

  • This is my first time posting on this board but as I will be a working mum, I thought it was time for me to start lurking!

I plan on working until I go into labour. I live about 10 minutes from my office and my office is 2 minutes from my hospital. My plan is that if I go into labour at work, I will leave immediately and drive myself home as I'd be more comfortable there.

  • If you are having contractions then I WOULD NOT DRIVE!!!! I couldn't talk or walk so I don't know how you would drive a car. I'm not even sure if I could see straight. That and sitting was the absolutely painful.....  I woke up with a bloody show and went to work on a Thursday. My back pain got worse and it felt like I might have been having some sings of early labor.(previous two days I was going to the bathroom more frequently, wasn't able to sleep at night, cant get comfortable, plus the back pain) I went home at lunch because I couldn't function with the back pain and wanted to lay down- my first real contraction showed up at 6pm, i had another at 8pm. I called my OB and chatted with him about what hospital he wanted me to go to when things got started. When I showed up to the hospital overnight they kept me and LO was out before lunch on Friday.
  • I am working up to my EDD, I have a friend I work with assigned to drive my car and me to pick up my husband (15 min away) and then my husband will drop her off at the metro and take me to the hospital which is only 15-20 min away from his work. Today we started throwing everything in the trunk being we live 45 min+ commute (depends on traffic) from work.

  • I worked a full day in labor, and didn't even realize it.  I was crampy and bleeding, but nothing timeable, so the doctor said to not come in.  That night around dinnertime, I finally made DH take me to the hospital, and I was 6 cm dilated.

  • My water broke on my way out of work 3 days after my EDD. I drove myself the 12 minutes home, called the OB, went through the McDonald's drive through and then got to the hospital. DS was born 12 hours later.

  • Yep.  Went into labor after lunch with #1.  Took me a few hours to even figure out I was in labor and I was still probably in a great deal of denial and thought that it could stop at any time.  I finished out the day and had a good idea I wouldn't be back the next morning.  Drove home 40 mins, went out to dinner with MH that night (it was our 1st wedding anniversary) and timed contrax through dinner.  Finally sometimes that night it hit me that this wasn't going to let up, but things didn't get uncomfortable until about 10 hours after my 1st contrax.  I didn't have DS until 5 pm the next day.  So, plenty of time for me.  Going into labor at work was not an issue at all.

  • This was my fear, b/c my commute is 50 miles each way, all highway.  I ended up being induced at 42w1d so I never got the "Honey, this is it!" moment, haha.  I did drive to and from work with one of those pee-pads in my front seat though!  :-)

  • Don't assume anything!  While I didn't go into labor at work, I had no warning.  My water broke and I was in full-on labor, with contractions every minute.  There was no way I could have driven anywhere.  If this would have happened at work, there is no way I would have been able to drive anywhere.  Also, I was in labor for less than 7 hours (DS is my only child).  So you never know!  I was lucky that I was home - I would have been screwed if I was out, and I have no idea what I would have done with my dog!

  • thedash,

My water broke in my car as dh parked at the drop off area at the hospital.  The reception lady took me up to l&d while dh parked the car.  I barely got into the room and got my pants down before ds was born.  I didn't have time to get checked in or anything.  They were asking me my info while rushing me to a room.  Dh got there just in time.  I had to have an episiotomy and was moved on to my side briefly because ds heart rate went down and I was delivered so quickly.  It was very overwhelming.  Most pain EVER.  I did not intend on going un medicated but didn't have time for anything.  I was one of those women you see on tv yelling in the hallway while in labor.  I wasn't cursing at anyone or anything but letting the noise out with the pain helped a bit.
