Weight after weaning

I'm curious to know if anybody gained weight while BFing, and if they couldn't lose weight until they after they weaned. Would be happy to hear any stories :)

Re: Weight after weaning

  • I didn't gain weight while bfing, but I didn't lose the last 5-10 lbs until about a month after I weaned my son. Then it just all kind of melted away without me changing anything.

  • I didn't gain weight really while nursing, but as for losing the baby weight, I noticed at 6 months at bunch of weight came off without me doing anything. I guess it is from the baby needing more from my milk as she got older. It seemed to go in spurts, no weight change and then all of the sudden a bunch seemed to come off. I am now working on weaning her and I was actually warned by a friend that I may gain some weight without the nursing to burn extra calories, but with more free time from weaning Ive finally started working out, so it has not been a problem.

  • I actually lost all my pregnancy weight 2 weeks after delivery, but as the baby grew and my supply increased, I gained about 5 lbs.  I think it's nature's way of cushioning you so you'll always have a little extra reserve on hand for constant milk production!

  • EDITED: I just realized that your baby is only 2 months old. Good lord, why on earth are you worried about your weight loss at this point??

Not all women lose weight from BFing without trying at all.

I gained weight while nursing. I am the biggest I have ever been (went from always being around 120 or less, to being 160 lbs). I basically accepted the fact that I would be much bigger than I was used to while nursing. I recently weaned completely, after nursing for 16 months (YAY!), and have seen a small decline in the number on the scale (155). I have also seemed to de-puff a little. My face looks slimmer, my arms look a little smaller too. I finally got my period for the first time this past week and am hoping now that I've had that hormonal shift the weight will come off easier.

I asked this questions on another board (and this one, I think) a while back. A ton of women didn't see any weight loss until after they weaned.

  • Weight loss from BF isn't an instant thing.  The estimated extra calories used by BF is 300-500, which equates to half a pound to one pound a week.  Your baby is less than 2 months old, so it's way too soon to worry about not losing weight yet.  It's not something you're going to notice right away, it happens slowly over time.  Some people do hold onto extra weight until they wean, but I wouldn't resign yourself to that just yet.  Try to be patient and you'll probably see the numbers go down eventually.

I lost the 35 lbs. I had gained by 5-6 months PP.  It was really gradual and the last 10 lbs. seemed to take a while.  That was completely BF related, no dieting or exercise.  I didn't have the time or motivation and I didn't want to do anything to negatively affect my supply.

  • Thank you for sharing! I'm mostly curious because I seem to have gained about 6 pounds since week 3 and maintain it despite some exercise. DS likes to eat though - has doubled his birth weight at 7 weeks. I've definitely got a lot of milk :) Now that I'm back to work and mostly pumping, I was curious about other people' s experiences were.
