2nd Trimester

Crib vs. Bassinet

When you first bring LO home, are you having them sleep in a crib or a bassinet?  I'm trying to figure out which one to buy, or if I should try to get both.  What do you guys think?

Re: Crib vs. Bassinet

  • I am getting a bassinet to help establish a routine with breastfeeding and sleeping. I already have a crib from my daughter, that I will transfer Baby N at around 5-6 months when Baby starts solids and has a better sleep pattern.

  • We will use the bassinet in our room for the first few months and then move LO to the crib.  We used the bassinet with DD for about the first 9 weeks and by then she was STTN and so we moved her to the crib.  Bassinets are usually only used in the first few months so if your planning on buying one or the other, I would go for the crib since you really won't be using the bassinet that long.

  • The crib will be right by our bed, but if there is enough room between the crib and bed, we might use one of those Rock n Play sleeper things for a while. I want one for use in the living room, and if LO likes sleeping in it, it can be taken to the bedroom when I want to be in bed. But since the crib will be right there, it will just hinge upon what the baby seems to like more.

  • We're using an arms reach cosleeper for the beginning and moving to a crib once the baby is too big. If you only want one, the crib is the one you need. A bassinet will only take you until the baby starts moving. Once he/she can roll around, a crib is necessary because bassinets are too shallow.  Bassinets/cosleepers/cradles are great for easy access.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • PNP's bassinet for the first couple months, but for the first week I will probably use the Fisher Price Rock 'n Play.  I like that it has an incline (we had a choking scare with DS his first night home).  After that, we will move him/her to their room in their crib.

  • We have a crib and bassinet (actually the Graco travel lite mini crib).  We'll keep DD2 in our room in the bassinet for the first few months, then transfer to the crib.

  • We will have a pack n play to use for our bassinet next to our bed for the first couple months then to the crib in baby's room.

  • My grandpa made a nice wooden bassinet for all the great-grandchildren to sleep in when they are born. I'll probably use it for a bit. I wasn't going to go out and buy a special bassinet, I would have just put LO straight into a crib.

  • Thank you ladies!  A friend is giving me an old crib of hers that they never used, so we'll probably just skip the bassinet thing, unless we end up getting one.

  • We're getting a Rock n Play for the first couple months then will hopefully be transitioning into the crib.

  • Crib starting day 1 but the Rock n Play in our living area for naps and just a safe place to put the baby down. We have a large dog and DD will be 17 -18 months old so I like having something raised off of the ground for the baby.

  • We had DD in a crib in her own room from day 1 and will be doing the same with this baby.

I find it was much easier when I needed to nurse her in the middle of the night, I was nursing her in her room and it made it so DH was able to get a good nights sleep and wasn't woken up by it since she wasn't in our room.

Also, I found that having her in her own room, everyone slept much better. Anytime we stayed overnight at my parents or in-laws, we didn't sleep that great and neither did she. Another reason is that is makes it so you don't have to worry about having to transition your baby from one bed or room to another since some babies have a hard time with is so by just using the crib to begin with, you avoid having that problem.

  • We're starting him right off in the crib. The nursery is literally 4 feet away from our bedroom. We live in a 2 br apartment, so I figured between the crib, pack n play, and the swing for naps, we wouldn't need a basinette.

Could be very promising, but look it up to make sure it hasn't been recalled. There have been massive crib recalls over the last several years. Some of the recalls were because of malfunctions on specific cribs (in my opinion the most dangerous situation). Some of the recalls happened in a massive recall of all drop side cribs about a year and a half ago.

About your original question, we will use an Arms reach until baby is too big, then we'll move to our crib.
