My lo is 6 mos old and has a cold and cough. His appetite is not what it usually is and I want to make sure he doesn't get dehydrated. Is it ok to give him a little pedialyte?
How are his wet diapers? Have you noticed an appreciable decrease in wetness? That is what our pedi has always told us to use as a gauge for needing additional fluids. The one time it happened, it was clear there was a real decrease in how much urine she was making. GL!
I would only use Pedialyte if your LO is eating less than half of his norm, or has not produced enough wet diapers for the day. When my LO was about 4 months old, she had a stomach virus that caused projectile vomiting and diarrhea. Our pedi told us to encourage milk as much as possible, but if she was not drinking at least half her norm or having less than 3 wet diapers/day, then to give Pedialyte.
When LO was 6 months old, she had surgery and was only allowed to have Pedialyte between midnight-5am before surgery. So yes, it is safe and OK to give this young, but I would only give it if he is showing signs of dehydration
