Follow-up to my question about grade-skipping...

Just wanted to thank everyone again for the input and insight into grade-skipping... we talked to DD's teachers, who've been consulting with her principal, and despite their general feelings about grade-skipping (they're not fans), they feel it's the best option for DD. One of the teachers said, "As an educator, I'm really philosophically opposed to grade-skipping. For A, though, I would do it."  DH and I have done a lot of thinking and soul-searching, and I think, assuming DD is on board with it, we're going to follow the recommendation of her teachers, whom we love and trust. So she'll skip first grade next year and go straight to 2nd grade. Ikes.

This has been one of the most challenging parenting decisions we've had to make so far, so I really appreciate all the different opinions. Thanks again!

  • Sounds like the right decision for her.  FWIW a girl I went to school with skipped a grade, I think 1st and was in my class.  She was successful socially and academically.  She graduated at 16 and was already taking some college courses. She's is a very successful, smart and creative adult!
  • thanks so much for posting success stories, ladies... It's sooo reassuring to know it's been successful for other kids in the past!

  • I didn't see your previous post, but one of my best friends did the same thing- skipped first, joined my grade in 2nd. She went on to be our valedictorian. We always joked that she was a genius at cutting and coloring. ;)She's a SAHM/realtor now.
  • I don't have any experience with grade skipping, so I was not able to contribute to your previous post, but wanted to say that I am glad you have made the decision you feel is right for your DD!

  • Good luck.  And remember that you don't have to finalize anything until the end of the year, or end of summer just in case you get nervous.  But it sounds right.
