Pregnant after IF

thyroid issues and Synthroid

Hello ladies, I hope to officially join you soon, but with my history of beta hell and disappearing positives, I'm sticking to the Vet board for now.

Quick question - if you have thyroid issues and take Synthroid, how often did they monitor your TSH and how drastically did it change?

My TSH was 0.9 before transfer and jumped to 2.6 by beta (hcg was 216).  My RE doesn't seem to think this is an issue but my endocrinologist does. I trust my endo so much more than my RE when it comes to this.  RE doesn't want to check it again for 6 weeks.  That seems like a long time considering the hcg made it jump that much so quickly.

Just looking for some perspective! TIA

Re: thyroid issues and Synthroid

  • Mine was checked before we cycled, then at my first OB appt (around 8 weeks) and will be checked again at the end of the month (around 26 weeks). It was a little lower at my 8 wk appt but still within normal.

    Good luck to you!

It took 44 cycles, just over 3 years, 6 failed IUI's in MI, and 1 round of IVF at CCRM to get our BFP!

    Beta #1 (9dp5dt) = 206, Beta #2 (11dp5dt) = 438

  • I did IVF, after 3 failed IUIs, and my RE checked my TSH at our very first appt. My RE wanted my TSH to be below 2.5 (he said it decreased the chance of m/c). When my TSH came back closer to 5, he put me on 100mcg of Synthroid daily. Then, every 3-4 weeks they checked my TSH. The Synthroid brought my TSH down to below 2.5, but once I was pregnant it creeped up to 2.7. I now take 100mcg of Synthroid 9x week.

I think 6 weeks is a long time to wait, but perhaps your Endocronologist can check it more often.

  • I would definitely consult with your endo.  Your thyroid hormone needs can increase as much as 30-50% during pregnancy (hence the rise in TSH indicating the need), because the embryo/fetus develops his/hers from yours.  I have no thyroid, and we raised my dosage right at the start of my pregnancy, and I'm having TSH and Total T4 checked every 4 weeks, which from what I've read is the standard for pregnant women with an already identified under-producing thyroid.

I've been taking 112 mcg 9x/week since I got pregnant (added in the 2 extra doses) and haven't needed to change it since; I think my most recent TSH was a little below 2.

  • My RE tested my thyroid once a month and had to adjust my dosage once. Now that I'm KU, I see an endocrinologist every couple months to be sure it's where it needs to be.

  • they checked my levels with each bloodwork.  and believe it or not, it started dropping, so i ended up stopping the synthroid due to morning sickness, and my numbers have been coming back perfectly normal!  Don't know how it happened, but baby helped lower my #s!
