Allergic to pineapples

I learned the hard way today that J is allergic to pineapples. He had two quarter sized chunks (cut up) with lunch today and within 10 minutes his entire face was red and irritated. I thought maybe it was just the juice aggravating his dry skin but minutes later he was covered in hives and his eyes were super swollen. Scariest moments of my life.

I threw him in the car and headed to the pedi and called them on the way. They told me to go directly to the ER - 2nd scariest moment of my life. I arrived at the ER and they immediately dosed him with something and took all his vitals. The good news here is that is was an external reaction and not an internal reaction. His throat and mouth were not swollen and the rest of him started to de-puff within the hour. We stayed there for a couple hours and were released with instructions to keep him on benadryl for 48 hours.

Moral of the story here is to be VERY careful with new foods. I admit, I have been more lax lately since he is getting older. We have no family history of food allergies on either side so I thought we were ok. Also make sure you have benadryl on hand. I did not and felt like a schmuck.

Tough day but J feels better and is sleeping now. I have to wake him at 3am to dose him again but for now I am enjoying the fact that he is safe, warm and comfy in his bed. Now I'm cracking my wine....

Re: Allergic to pineapples

  • so scary, we've had some I what I think are intolerance issues (vomiting, diarrehea) but no allergic reactions yet.  I'm so nervous with new things.  Because of DDs milk intolerance and issues with solids we'll be seeing an allergist at some point and I can't wait.

  • I have our 9 month appt next week and am requesting to be referred to an allergist on the suggestion of the er doc. She also suggested I demand an epi pen just in case. Siiiggghhh.
  • Scary. Dh is allergic to pineapple so that is the one food I am afraid to try with lo.

  • Molly had a reaction to hummus. We think it was the sesame seeds in the tahini.

I keep Benadryl on hand when introducing new foods. Pineapple is not a high 'allergenic' food though, so did the pedi tell you to be careful about other foods?

  • So scary, but I'm so glad you and the pedi were able to react so quickly to get him to the ER and get him some meds! We think Ev has an egg and banana allergy, but luckily his reactions have been nothing that scary - just puking, a little rash, and with egg some puffiness around the eyes. I can't imagine how I'd deal with him having such a strong fast reaction to something.

    Hope that's the only allergy!

Yes. The ER doctor told us that because he has eczema as well we should be very careful with him. I guess eczema = allergies...didn't know that. She also said that even though it is not on the "warning" list that a lot of babies are allergic to pineapple.

  • So scary. Glad he's okay. Good tip about the benadryl.
  • That's so scary! I'm glad he's okay! Thanks for the tip about Benadryl, I hadn't even thought about it.

I have only one food allergy and it developed when I was an adult, no food allergies at all on LO's father's side, so I also figured we weren't at risk.  She's allergic to something in mixed berry yogurt melts.  I am guessing it's probably the strawberry.  Luckily nothing to the level you described but she gets a red rash all the way down both sides of her face.

  • Wow, that is so scary! Thank goodness that he is ok. I will definitely continue to keep a close eye when introducing new foods.

  • I know the feeling! They probably gave him a shot from an epi-pen. You should get a 'scrip from your Pedi to keep on hand for emergiencies. Also watch other tropical fruits as well...mangoes...

Hummus is often a problem food and its usually the sesame seeds thats the culprit...

  • Glad everything is okay. Just be careful, you may be surprised how many things are sweetened with pineapple juice!  Read labels.
