Induction at 41 weeks?

I had an OB appt today, I'm 39 weeks exactly.  No sign of the baby coming out anytime soon.  My OB said he won't let me go past 41 weeks and asked how I felt about being induced. I'd ideally like the baby to come whenever he or she is ready, but I expected him to at least let me go 42 weeks before he would consider inducing.

 Anyone else potentially being induced?

Re: Induction at 41 weeks?

  • My midwife said the same thing. She said that they don't like their patients to go past 41 weeks.

  • I will likely be induced if I go past my due date because the baby is measuring quite large. My doctor would prefer to schedule a C-section, but I'm determined to try for a vaginal birth.

  • I asked my OB today how big he thought the baby appears to be.  I look really small and he felt around and his estimate was only 5-6 lbs at this point.  Here's to hoping for a baby on the smaller side Smile
  • I'll be 41 weeks monday which is the day we will schedule induction. My doc says they like the baby in the nursery by 42 weeks.

  • I was induced with my first at 41 weeks due to GD. They would have let me go to 42 weeks though. I think it depends on what you are comfortable with.

  • My OB told me that the placenta starts to die out around 41 weeks.  Once your placenta dies out, there can be many complications, which is why they wait only until 41 weeks.  It is standard.

Umm, what? I was induced at 42 weeks. The placenta was a little calcified but still doing it's job and my baby was healthy.
  • I was induced with my DD at 41 weeks because things in my life started getting a little crazy and I needed to be able to deal with them without having to worry about harm to her. They gave me cervadil around 8 am and she was successfully (vaginally) delivered before 3 pm. Dr told me it was probably going to take 24 hours for the induction meds to kick in but oh well! Everything turned out great! I say good luck to you and whatever you choose.Big Smile

  • I am 41 weeks tomorrow.  I am scheduled to go in for the ripening agents Monday morning and will be allowed home after around 4 hours.  If that doesnt bring on labor I am scheduled for induction on Tuesday am.  Our baby is measuring big, 9lb 6oz, so that along with the induction probably increases my chance for a C Section, but I am still hoping to deliver vaginally!

  • i'm actually 41 weeks and 5 days today.  my doctor won't let me go past 42 weeks so i have an induction scheduled for sunday night.  he saw no medical reason to induce any sooner...and being "uncomfortable" doesn't count :)  however i've had 2 doctor appointments per week since my due date with ultrasounds to check the heart rate, baby measurements (make sure the baby is still growing and not too big), and check amniotic fluid.  my fluid levels are great and the placenta is still going strong.

ask your dr. about a "bishop score".  standard medical assessment my doctor used it to chart whether or not inducing sooner than 42 weeks would be effective and result in a vaginal delivery.  good luck!

This is incorrect. 41 weeks is just standard for your OB. My OB, like many others, waits up to 2 weeks after your EDD. And your placenta doesn't start dying at 41 weeks. It may begin calcifying, but that can also happen much earlier.

  • Every doctor/midwife is different. My midwife said 41 1/2 weeks is her cutoff point and then she'll induce.

  • I will be induced a day before my due date if baby doesn't come before then. Primary reason: doctor is on vacation the week after due date and i don't feel comfortable with any other doctor. Not the greatest excuse for induction, but it's what I prefer.
  • I don't know about "dying" but our midwife did say it begins to be less effective by 42 weeks, which is why most Drs induce at that point.  Personally, I'd go as long as the Dr would let me before inducing but that's just because I want him to come out when he's ready not when I am.  I'm ready now, dammit! :P

  • I am scheduled for induction on Tuesday, Ill be exactly 41 weeks on Tuesday (still hoping he comes sooner) but my doctor wanted the induction scheduled in between 41 and 42 weeks. She said she doesnt like any of her patients getting to close to 42 weeks.
