1st Trimester

Vegas??

I just took a positive pregnancy test and I guess I'm about 4.5 weeks along. My husband and I have a trip to Vegas with his parents planned in a week and I'm not sure if I'll be ready to tell them (they are much more emotional than I am and I feel that if anything were to happen their "support" would actually make it harder). My husband and I usually drink, and I'm worried it will look odd if I am not ordering a drink. I've heard it's not easy to slyly order a non-alcoholic drink in Vegas. Any suggestion? Also, any fun suggestions of things to do that would not put me in that situation as much.

Thanks!

Re: Vegas??

  • How good is your husbands tolerance? I would order the same thing as DH, and pretend to sip mine... and when his got a little lower I non nonchalantly switch them. I would just keep doing that. And if you have a chance, ordering a drink that looks like a non alcoholic drink works too (if you can do it). Or, just go with the old "I;m on antibiotics for a UTI, so I can't drink" works too. I am usually a lush, so I have gotten pretty good at it. LOL. Okay, lush is a little harsh...

  • To be safe, many women wait until they are into their 2nd trimester before announcing however since these are your inlaws, you may want to clue them in.

As far as drinking goes, you can always pretend you're drinking Big Smile .  Whenever hubby and I go out, I order a soda and lime or a cranberry and soda...no one will know the difference Smile  Ordering those drinks are super easy...no one really questions you despite the lack of alcohol.

  • Before we were telling people about the pregnancy if we'd go out with friends I'd tell them I was getting over a flu and the antibiotics made me projectile vomit if I drank alcohol.  No one ever questioned it.

  • I am also going to Vegas next weekend and I am pretty concerned about all the smoke indoors.  Where I am from, there is no smoking allowed in public places, at all.

Honestly, I am (when not preg, obviously) a drinker and my friends and family would immediately think something was up if I turned a cocktail down.  Gosh, that makes me sound like a lush.  I feel that Vegas would be a VERY difficult place to hide that you are not drinking.  If you are really against telling them, maybe order beers in a dark bottle and dump it in the rest room (or leave it behind) or sip soda with lime.  Good luck.
