2nd Trimester

Could I be further along?

So my doctor hasn't made any indication about where I am since about week 13. From there we have just held to that, and continued counting up each week (I tick over on Fridays). Well I have just been wondering if I could be further along than I actually am? According to the last measurement at 13 weeks I would currently be 25 weeks. I am showing a lot though, and have gained 18 pounds at this point, plus hubby and I have been able to feel kicks since what would have been between 16 and 18 weeks. Then since about 23 weeks I feel him kick every hour pretty often (unless I am very active at work), plus now what would be my 25th week he kicks SO HARD. I am a firs time mother so all of this could totally be normal and right on track, I just wanted to get some opinions :) I plan on asking my doctor on the 19th what little one is measuring.

eta: They did tell me his weight at my 20 week appointment but not the measurement. They said he was 15 ounces. Which according to a lot of charts puts me over 20 weeks. Could he just be a big baby?

  • Yeah. My due date was established at my 6 week appointment. They did an early ultrasound to determine where I was because I don't have regular cycles, in fact I didn't have cycles at all, and we were told we wouldn't be able to get pregnant naturally, but we did :) So that is why I question the accuracy of my due date.

Yes If there was a change your Dr. would tell you. They are not just going to be like "Surprise"

Plus everything you said sounded normal to me so why is there a question to begin with?

It doesnt get more accurate than a first trimester ultrasound.  Any dating scan under 20 weeks is considered adequate, but 6 weeks is awesome.  If babies measure ahead or behind they are SGA or LGA (small for gestational age or large for gestational age, but anything between the 10th and 90th percentiles is normal)

Oh :) Okay! Thanks, this is good to know!

  • At my 19 week appt baby was measuring alittle over 20 weeks. My doctor told me it is completely normal for baby to measure 2 weeks over or under. However, the earlier the pregnancy you are, the more accurate the measurements and estimations for how far along you are. Think of it this way, when measuring something tiny there is a lot less room for error.

So, according to my doctor, no matter how big baby is or even how big mother gets, the due date tends to stay the same becasue those early measurments at 6-10 weeks are the most accurate and that is what they use to determine EDD.

  • My OB won't change the due date after the dating u/s (which he does before 10 weeks).  DD measured ahead for weeks before he mentioned it to me and said he wanted me to get a late u/s to check her size.  She was just a big baby but was born healthy at 38.3 weeks after my water broke at work causing us to do the c-section a few days earlier than planned..

  • I just had my a/s on Tuesday and my babies were both measuring at 21wks and one weighed 14 oz and the other 11.5oz. My dr. said not to worry, every one's baby grows at different speeds

  • Everyone's belly grows at a different rate and senses baby's movements differently. In terms of the baby's weight, that is just an estimate. Your baby's weight may be higher or lower. And if somehow that estimate were right on target, healthy babies still fall in a range of normal--think of how two babies can both be born at 41 weeks and one will be 7.5 lbs while the other is 11lbs
  • The comment about the first ultrasound being the most correct is not always true. I had mine and they said I was 8w6d when I was really 11w6d. I found this out when I went in for my NT scan and was told I was 16w1d not 13w1d and I could not get the NT scan done. The Dr confirmed that my first ultrasound was wrong. Due dates can change, mine sure did.
