Stupid Maternity Clothes Question

So I've been putting off buying maternity clothes as long as possible (I'm super cheap when it comes to buying myself stuff), but I can't stand squeezing into normal jeans anymore. It's so uncomfortable!

My question is, what size should I get? Pre-Pregnancy I was a size 8, but those were impossible to get on about a month ago. I've been wearing size 10s since then, but now those are getting tight as well :[. I know you're supposed to get the size you were pre-pregnancy, but I'm scared to get an 8 because the 10s fit my legs/butt snuggly now too -- it's not just my stomach.

So should I get an 8 or a 10 in maternity jeans?

p.s. the reason I'm not trying them on in the store to find out is because i'm 5'11", and have to order them online.

Re: Stupid Maternity Clothes Question

  • Most of the maternity clothes I've seen are in Small, Medium, Large - not actual numbered sizes. You'll probably be fine in a medium.

I'm a 12 and I finally found some large that fit me - some were too big, some too tight in the thighs. Just like regular clothes, they're all cut differently. And I think someone just recently said there are some stores that carry tall in the store...Old Navy, maybe?

  • What store are you ordering from on line? Can you go into the store, try some pants on to see how they fit in the belly/thighs, and the order the length you need on line? That''s probably going to be the best way to know for sure.
  • I bought Large from motherhood maternity (was a pre-preg size 10) and i probably could have gotten away with a medium.  They stretch out easily and I like to wait a few wears before I wash them so they get kind of baggy.  But when I get them out of the dryer they fit perfect!

  • I'm normally an 8 as well (well, at least I was pre- PRE- pregnancy. haha) I ordered size large in jeans from Motherhood Maternity and they are definitely baggy....but I like all of my stuff baggy right now. Before being pregnant I liked form-fitting things, but now I'm most comfortable in baggy pants and flowy dresses. The only thing I don't like about them is that they are way too long but I am also 5'4". I'd go with a medium or large and you should be all set.

  • If you have an Old Navy by you that carries maternity in the store, they have different lengths available in the store. I was an 18 pre pregnancy and bought an 18 (long) there and they are actually a little big, so you would probably be fine with an 8.

  • Generally speaking, you buy your normal size.  Maternity already accounts for everything being larger :)  So yes, an 8 doesn't fit you now but that's a regular 8 so a maternity 8 should still fit (which would most likely be a medium for places that only do S/M/L)

  • I lurk here, but thought I'd answer because this drove me crazy too. I was a 6 pre-pregnancy, when my 6s no longer started fitting I started wearing the 8s I had in my closet from my heavier days. Those started getting tight and I went up to the 10s I had and they were fitting fine, they would get baggier in the butt after a wear or two. I got a pair of medium Motherhood jeans off of CL, and they are huge on me. Way too baggy in the legs, butt, and crotch area. My local ON has maternity, so I went and tried on the numbered sizes, 6 and 8, the materity 8s were too big in the butt and front area again, and the 6s were perfect. I learned my lesson, buy your pre-pregnancy size or try to go in person and try on. If you were an 8 pre-pregnancy, and want to go with Motherhood, I'd go with the medium, if you're looking at ON or Gap, or something like that, go with the 8.

Even though they would be super short you can still try them on "for size" in the store.  This makes sense to me.

  • I'm a 14 and the Large at Motherhood maternity fit fine BUT I ended up having to get petite because they were SO long... I'm 5'4"

  • If you order from Old Navy, order the 8. I usually wear a 10 in dress pants, and all the ON pants I ordered in size 10 were huge. I found a size 8 in store that happened to be a return that works well.

Other than that store, I would go with the 10 depending on the fit of the pant you are ordering. The legs and butt in maternity pants should fit the same as in regular pants.

Oh, and I'm so excited for you to get some maternity pants! I LOVE maternity pants and don't know why I even tried belly bands or squeezing into my old pants!

  • I will only order pants in number size - from gap or old navy.  They seem to fit better than S, M, L.  Old Navy is on the big size so order a lower number.  Gap is more of a true fit.  If you order on line and they don't fit, you can return them at the store.

  • On the websites they have a corresponding size-chart.  Pre-pregnancy size 8-10 usually correlates to a medium, but just check out the company's sizing chart.
