1st Trimester

Cannot sleep!

I am just 6 weeks (to be confirmed at my 2nd appointment tomorrow ... this morning) and among the lovely nausea feeling all day, I cannot sleep at all. I get maybe 4 hours of sleep a night. Is this normal? I feel terrible for my husband.

Re: Cannot sleep!

  • Yes.  I have been really tired, and then lay in bed for hours, unable to fall asleep.  And wake up several times a night.  It doesn't help either that DD is teething really bad, and she is up half the night too.  She decided to wake up at 4 today.....

  • I feel ya! I've only been pregnant for like a minute, but I'm exhausted and yet can't sleep. Today, I woke up at 2:55...awesome!

  • Oh yeah, totally normal! I wake up in the middle of the night all the time and can't go back to sleep, usually I just lie there and feel gross. Good times!

  • Pregnancy, even despite above average morning sickness, has been my cure to insomnia. The unisom/b6 mix might be assisting with that though.

  • I was like this for weeks 4-8.  Now I'm almost to 10 weeks and I can finally sleep better at night.  Hormones are finally evening out!

  • This is me, exactly. I'm exhausted all day long, but after I fall asleep at night I've been waking up for hours without being able to fall back asleep  :(

  • Yup, it sucks ever since a few days before my BFP I have not had a full nights sleep. I am up basically every hour. I?ve been told its just the hormones. I hope it gets better soon.
  • Ugh this is awful!  Not trying to rub it in, but I fall asleep within 5 minutes, and pretty much stay asleep, unless I need to use the bathroom, or throw the blankets off me because I get so hot!

I have just this week overcome my all day "morning sickness", but I still forced myself to run 30 minutes each day.  In fact, I felt LESS sick and nauseous when I was running, and I'd eat a quick healthy snack the minute I finished, like an apple or banana.  I think the exercise totally helped me with the falling asleep.  Unfortunately I wasn't able to do anything else, like clean or cook, but at least I was getting sleep!

I know it seems like an impossible task, but even some brisk walking might help with falling asleep at night :)  Worth a try, and it is healthy for you and the baby!

  • Totally normal. I didn't have this problem when I was pregnant with DD (well I did at the end when I was huge and uncomfortable), but this time....good lord! I wake up at 2 or 3 every morning and can't fall back asleep. Luckily, I have no problem falling asleep when I first go to bed, though. My doctor actually said that I can take Benadryl to help me sleep. She just said not to take it all the time, and only when really necessary. GL!
