Cloth Diapering

many questions

So, Im considering cloth diapering (just very part time), but Ive got alot of questions. If you wouldnt mind to induldge me for a moment.

I got Kushies in a box of hand-me-downs (looks like a starter set). Would you use used CDs? They are from my SIL, not a stranger, BTW. Second, do you need to use the biodegradeable liners, or are those optional?

Any other thoughts, suggestions, or tips? I dont even know what I dont know.

Sorry for the format, bumping from my phone.

Re: many questions

  • I have used previously used CD's even from people I don't know.  As long as they are in good condition, and I make sure I wash them first (I strip them before using them), then I'm ok with it.

I like using the biodegradable liners at this stage because it makes cleaning up poop easier.  But I forget a lot and it's really not a big deal without them.  You don't have to use them, it's just a preference type of thing.

I know everyone usually will point you to the FAQ's at the top of this board first.  They are super helpful when you are first starting out.  I also like the cloth diapering 101 videos on youtube to see all the different types of diapers and their uses. And after all of that, you can just lurk here on the boards and read the questions and answers posted - they will probably be some of the same questions you have!

Since your SIL used CD's perhaps she can give you a lesson in use and care for the CD's.  That would probably be the most helpful resource for you!

  • I think it's safe to say the majority of us regulars on this board use used cloth diapers =) I see no reason not to.

As for liners, before your baby starts solids at 6 months; the poop can go straight in the washing machine. It sounds gross; but it's completely water soluble until solids are introduced. Once they are on solids, you can use liners, but maybe people do not. You can choose to dunk your diapers in the toilet, or spray them off.

I like seeing other PGAL mommas over here :-)

I've bought some used diapers - I see no problem with it; I will wash them before use.

The liners are optional and probably only really useful if LO is eating solids for the poop reasons mentioned by PP.

:) Now I know some one I can ask! To PP, I'll definitely check out the faq.

  • I have no trouble using used CD's. That being said Kushies have very mixed reviews, so if you aren't successful with that particular diaper, don't be discouraged!
