We just started supplementing with formula about a week ago and we are starting to have some constipation/gas issues. Pedi told us to try and get 6 oz (daily average) of regular pedialyte in DS a day to help soften the stool/make it easier to pass. Anyone done this before? I have a hard enough time trying to get the appropriate amount of BM/Formula in him anyways (he's a snacker and likes to eat his "meal" over 30 minutes or so). I've tried giving it to him after a normal feeding but he kind of just tongues around at it and i don't want to give it to him before to take place of what he's supposed to be eating. We wanted to try and go a medication-less route because he's already on meds for reflux. Any suggestions on how to deal with this? Any success stories/failures??

Re: Pedialyte and constipation
We gave DD a dropper full of pedialyte at the end of the night after her bedtime bottle when she was backed up. We continued this until she had the most massive diaper blowout you can imagine.
Be very careful when mixing the formula. If you put too much powder in there it can back LO up. Too much water and it messes with nutrition. So, I just make sure my bottles are spot on.
After shots DD is always backed up (even though they say it will give her diarrhea, it never does. She gets so backed up she is bloated). We gave her a dropper full of prune juice. Works pretty quick so be careful!
Also, make sure LO is truly backed up (hard pellet-like stool when she does attempt to go). DD's poop was just incredibly thick, but pastey. She had an awful time passing it until we got the measurements for the bottle under control.
We don't use the pedialyte or prune juice often. We've only had to use it four times after her 2 month and 4 month shots.
If you use the dropper just quickly shoot it into their cheek. They will swallow. Be prepared for them to get a look of horror on their face, but it passes quickly especially if you play music or do something entertaining. Just like with meds-- it is not milk so its rejectamenta!
Its not good to give a lot of water but pedi said 1-2oz a day for a couple days to alleviate constipation was fine.
