School-Aged Children

School activities/programs ?

How many reminders do you get about school programs?   I think we got 1-2 notes about the program today.

How many do you need?   More.

We have a lot going on and I forgot about DD's today and am having to squeeze it into my schedule (i work).  I just feel overwhelmed with keeping up with everything right now.

Re: School activities/programs ?

  • How many reminders do you get about school programs? General school program -  1 - 2 reminders (usually one in the weekly newsletter and a small note or sticker home the day of to remind us).  Class programs - 2-4 reminders, usually 1 in the monthly newsletter and a couple home separately.  And, most of this stuff is availabe online on calendars to look at anytime.

How many do you need? It's a good amount for us, but I am very careful about putting things in my planner the first time I see it.  I know how I am ... ;-)

  • DS's school does a good weekly bulletin every Thursday.  If there's an after school program, there might be a separate flier in his folder on that day or on the day before.

His class will sometimes earn rewards for good behavior, and the next day will be pajama day, stuffed animal day, etc.  There have been times when the teacher hasn't given notice until the end of the day, and we have short notice for stuff.

DD's middle school has a weekly robo-call update on Sunday evening.  It's a pain because it's long, but it does the job!

    DS, born 8/25/04 -- 7th grade
  • It depends on the program.

For example, DD has orchestra, and aside from being expected to be at rehearsal every week, we don't get updates unless the teacher is sick.  Once they have a change in schedule (close to performance time, such as dress rehearsal, getting on and off stage) we'll get an update for when to get there for extra rehearsals, the school show, what day is the school performance (so they dress up, etc.) - but it will probably only be one update, unless there is an extra call for volunteers to help out.

Other activities (one time activities, like art night, the read-a-thon), if the parent in charge is very determined, or the school doesn't have the numbers they were expecting, they'll send several.

Everything is done by email, which is why I think they don't have the participation they are looking for!
