High-Risk Pregnancy

Labetalol Users

I had my daughter a year ago and I'm still dealing with bp issues.  I was prescribed 100mg of labetalol twice a day by my pcp and haven't started the meds yet.  My bp readings are around 130/80 ish sometimes 90. I started bc pills a few mths ago and it appears my bp spiked, so I have been off the bc pills for about a mth and my bp has come down a little. Do you have any side effects from labetalol?  Did you see a cardiologist or pcp for your bp? How long did it take for labetalol to decrease your bp? Also, what were your bp readings at when your dr prescribed meds?

Re: Labetalol Users

  • I was on Labetalol with my first pregnancy. The only side effect I had was headaches (ironically enough they were supposed to decrease them, haha). After my BP stayed high after giving birth I went to my GP and he kept me on the meds rather than switch me (he wanted to switch me since I was no longer pregnant, he prefers other meds not approved for pregnancy) and just see with pregnancy weight loss what would happen and my BP went down naturally. Now...my OB will not give me BC pills because of the horomones and the risk of BP increase. My option (now excuse my pregnancy brain I cannot think straight) was a non-horomonal implant...like Mirena but it's the one without any horomones...whatever the name may be, haha. But I know at 130/80 or even 90 my GP would not prescribe meds, mine was 150/100s after pregnancy and it had eventually returned to normal. But as soon as I took the meds, my BP decreased. My BP readings were normal 120/80 or lower with meds. However now is a completely different story, haha. Hope this helps!! :)

  • The only side effects I found in me was the headaches and to consistently take them at the same time. I am currently pregnannt and still on labetalol and procardia for "hypertension" after servere preeclampsia. I am seeing a Nephrologist (kidney specialist) and was recommended to by my medical team for my bp. You may want to talk to your doctor about it if your bp does not lower after a few months. I was referred to one after 5 months of taking the meds. Hope this helps!
  • I have not had any side effects. My blood pressure was in the 150/90 range to start. I only take 100 mg once a day and my blood pressure is normally right at 120/78.
  • I haven't had any side effects, I am on 100 mg twice a day.  BP is usually 160s/80s and it's down in the 140 range on meds, only started during pregnancy, even though I was high before getting pregnant.  Not seeing a cardiologist, just a high risk doc for ultrasounds.
  • I was on a different B/P med whe I got pregnant, and my doc told me to stay on it (Dont remember name off the top of my head).  In my second trimester (around 20 weeks), my B/P actually dipped too low (102/62, which is very LOW for me) so doc told me to go off B/P meds all together.  I was a little nervous about this, since I had been on meds for about 2 years to control my B/P.

I measured it every day, and about 2 days after getting off it went up to 165/95, so I called doc and they put me on Labetalol.  It has kept me perfect (110-120/ 65-80).  So far no major side affects either.  I have been really happy with it!

  • i am 11 months out from delivery, and still have high bp, so i've been dx as chronic.  i came home from the hospital on labetalol and procardia, then weaned off, and it spiked up again.  now i take metoprolol.  bp's have been under control for the most part (120-130/70-80) since then.

  • @p1nklemonade- What were your bp readings when it spiked and they put you on metoprolol?  Also, is metoprolol safe during pregnancy? I'm just trying to think ahead for when we try to conceive a second child.
