Pregnant after IF

Popping over from IF board- IVF and Baby Aspirin

Dear ladies of PAIF,

I would love to benefit from your positive experience as I journey into my first IVF cycle. In Europe where I am cycling, things like aspirin are not discussed as part of an IVF cycle, although I have read some research on the positive effects as related to blood flow to the uterus and implantation.

Question:

Did you take low dose aspirin in your IVF cycle?

When did you start/stop taking it?

What reasoning did your doctor give you for his usage of it in your protocol?

Do you think it helped you?

Re: Popping over from IF board- IVF and Baby Aspirin

  • I did take low dose aspirin as part of my IVF cycle - although, I should say I used it in ALL of my IVF cycles, so I'm not sure it was the silver bullet, KWIM?

I started it a few days before stims and stopped it as soon as I got a positive beta.  My RE has IVF patients take it because of the research available that suggests it could help blood flow to the uterus.  However, my RE also said the research goes both ways on this, so it wasn't a 100% necessary piece of the procotol.

Hope that helps!  Good luck :)

    Question:

Did you take low dose aspirin in your IVF cycle? YES

When did you start/stop taking it? Beginning of IVF cycle / I'm still taking it.

What reasoning did your doctor give you for his usage of it in your protocol? Dr. said it helps with implantation and might help b/c of my thyroid issues. It is part of the standard IVF protocol at my clinic.

Do you think it helped you? I'm sure it didn't hurt and maybe in connection with my protocol was the right combination for me.  I would ask your Dr. b/c from what I've read baby aspirin can't hurt anything.  Good luck!

  • It is standard protocol for all IVFs with my RE as well and the reasons were similar to the PP, blood flow to the uterus as well as the prevention of potential clotting or other issues with implantation. I was told to take it up until 34 weeks so that's what I'm dong and I started it before I started cycling - it was listed with PNVs as something I should just be on. I think my successful cycle was because of many different factors but I'm certainly glad I was on it post transfer as I've heard good reasons to do so - I guess I don't think it could hurt.

Good luck with your upcoming IVF!

2 IVFs & 1 FET. Welcome home baby girl!
  • I was on it for both of my IVF cycles. For the first, I started the baby aspirin the day after ET, and my RE only had me on it because I am borderline positive for one of the antiphospholipid antibodies. I continued to take it until the pregnancy was confirmed as ectopic.

I went to a new RE for my second cycle, and it's standard protocol for all IVFs there. I started taking it before starting stims, stopped two days before egg retrieval (to prevent bleeding), and started again the day after egg retrieval. I'm still on it and will be on it until 36 weeks, again because of the antiphospholipid result. Normal protocol for my RE is to stop taking it after heartbeat is confimred.

Do I think it helped? Not for my cycle that ended in ectopic, certainly, but who knows for this one? I definitely don't think it hurt, though, and it's an easy, safe, and inexpensive thing to do, so why not? Good luck to you!

  • Hi Glueck!!! Nice to see you over here!

Did you take low dose aspirin in your IVF cycle?  Yes, I did. It is standard at my clinic.  My RE wanted me to begin it prior to my cycle. In my case, I had begun it about 1 month prior to my IVF cycle back in October and stayed on it until my FET a couple weeks ago in Feb. (I did not stop taking it after my failed IVF#1 or while I had to sit out 2 periods afterwards.)

When did you start/stop taking it?  I stopped taking it approximately 6dp5dt (6 days past my 5 day transfer.....which was 1 day after my 1st Pos. HPT) only because I had a spotting blood incident and my RN advised me to stop taking it for awhile.  Then 2 days after that, I had a light bleeding incident (this time a light AF flow, definitely more than spotting). My RN then advised that I just stay off it entirely from then on b/c the aspirin might make it worse.

What reasoning did your doctor give you for his usage of it in your protocol? My RN mentioned to me that it would help bring blood flow to the uterus.

Do you think it helped you? I honestly do not know if it helped get me pregnant but as far as getting periods I feel like it helped. In the past, my periods were almost non-existent (I would go up to a year without a period) and during my failed IVF cycle and right before beginning my FET, by miracle w/the help of bcp I was getting my period like clockwork. I wonder if the aspirin helped with that?  But post transfer, I don't think I will take aspirin longer than the 1st Pos. HPT unless my RE says otherwise. I don't want to blame the aspirin for my spotting & bleeding episode but I do wonder if it caused me to bleed a bit more that 2nd time than if I hadn't still been on it? My RN told me that the bleeding was normal but it was just very scary for me to see a bright red, light AF flow while I was pregnant. Sorry if that is confusing how I phrased it!

I am wishing you the very, very best with your cycle Glueck!!! I look forward to reading your updates and I cannot wait to see you over here!!!

  • I took it for all of my cycles.  I stopped taking it this time at 5 weeks when I had a bleeding issue, probably unrelated.
