Frequent pooping in underwear?

DD handles peeing in the potty fine but she has suddenly started pooping in her panties like 4-6 times a day. Little poops and when we ask why she won't go on the potty she says she doesn't have to poop.

Any idea?

Re: Frequent pooping in underwear?

  • Are they round and hard? She may have an aversion to using the toilet, so she's holdng her BM's. 4-6 times a day of hard poop sounds like some are escaping rather than she's releasing her bowels.

I'd rule out any underlying medical issues with a visit to the pedi and then create a calm time/place to poop - maybe the morning or evening. My DD was fully potty trained and then started holding her poop for her overnigt pull-up and then refused the toilet and asked for a diaper. At first I was anti-poop-in-a-diaper, but then she started holding so much that she got constipated and I thought "Eh, its her body, her poop, she can poop in a diaper if she wants." She didn't wear one, but if she asked, she got to poop in one. It lasted a few weeks and then disapeared as an issue. We did a lot of positive feed-back for toilet BMs and the issue resolved.

My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.

No, she isn't constipated. She's had issues with that since birth so we know what that looks like for her. That's what is so confusing - it isn't a constipation thing and she doens't act scared of the potty at all.

I'm thinking about trying the diaper thing you mentioned to see if we can move past this. I hate bringing back diapers, but I'm also really sick of dealing with poopy underwear.

  • Do you think it is intentional for her? When we PTd DS, at 3.5, he was doing fine with peeing on the toilet and knew he was supposed to poo there, but sometimes didn't. We didn't get angry, but we explained how dirty it was to poo our pants, made him help clean up, and then I'd pop him in the shower for a really quick cleaning. He actually didn't like the shower at all, so avoiding it was enough incentive to encourage pooping on the toilet.
