Re: Stand up tanning once a week!
~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~

My IF blog
I was trying to avoid it but as I was getting married in the middle of february. I had 2 options: spray tan and risk the inhalation and absorbtion of chemicals or fake and bake and risk over heating.
I decided to do a face machine, where I was fully dressed in a very ventilated place (out in the main room, not a small booth) and I tanned my face, neck and upper chest by creating a makeshift tube top out of my tshirt and covering my belly with my sweater. I did this 2-3 times for 6 min. at a time to prevent any type of overheating.
I would be very cautious in actually going naked into a booth and just standing there for 10 min. Honestly, that sounds very scary. Why don't you just pile on the bronzer and hold out for another month or two until the sun comes out?
I am on my second pregnancy and second OB. (We moved.)
Both have strongly urged me NOT to tan. I don't anyway, but they could not stress it enough and it's even in the pamphlets I was sent home with. It is harmful to your unborn child, not to mention your skin. Please refrain from tanning. I am sure you look lovely with fair skin.

I also think you should call your regular doctor for a second opinion
THIS!!! After working for a cosmetic surgeon who also performed Mohs surgery to remove skin cancer, and assisting in surgeries removing cancerous cells from all sorts of areas...face, neck, scalp scalp, not to mention areas where the sun doesn't shine (inside of labia fold, as well as a butt-crack)-sorry for the visual...I have since not stepped foot into a tanning bed, and make sure to wear SPF daily-no matter the season.
If you really, really need to have a bronzed look, for your own sake (nevermind the unborn babe) use make-up.

This. Tanning is terrible for you and I can't imagine any doctor telling you otherwise. Take it from someone who just had Mohs surgery to remove an evolving melanoma. There are worse things than being pale - like having a 3 inch scar across your back.
Tanning isn't good for your skin's health PG or not. I am surprised that so many PPs are advocating self-tanners, though. Slathering my skin with chemicals that creates fake color seems the opposite of healthy to me. But, if you must there are indeed products that are less sketchy...

More Green For Less Green
Aside from the fact that tanning is unhealthy regardless of being pregnant or not, another concern is overheating while in the bed.
Also, are you sure your doctor wasn't referring to a spray tan? I've never done indoor tanning because I have naturally dark skin but in high school, I had a friend who worked at a salon and I remember her saying the stand up beds were the most extreme and reserved for customers who came in on almost a daily basis.
Here's my advice: Get a different doctor.
Second piece of advice: don't listen to the PP's who said get a spray tan. Your skin is your largest organ. It abosorbs stuff. Stuff like chemicals that are in spray tans.
"not in there no more than"? For real?

This. Glad I'm not the only one preaching this. If you don't have to use it, just don't.

I've never tanned a day in my life, but even if I did, I certainly wouldn't do it pregnant. Being tan isn't worth hurting your baby.
Alright, alright, Florida, quit bragging. Its only 60 here and I don't have an ocean!!!
Actually, I asked my Dr about spray tan and she said she wouldn't recommend it but to just use a standing tanning bed or go out in the sun instead. I was shocked since I haven't used a tanning bed in years because of the risks. Sometimes I am amazed that some Drs actually have their MDs
The reason doctors tell you not to go tanning while prego is because the beds can raise your body temp. and you may become dehydrated. The actual rays do not "cook" the baby, as some might say. I own a tanning salon, and ALOT of the solutions that are used in spray tanning are sugar based, that is the way i would go. I know im gonna get flamed for this but oh well.
If you do use a stand up i would not go for more than 6-8 min as most stand ups now are only 10 min. max. Which means they have UVA rays (the ones that deepen and darken your tan) they do have good ventilation, but can still get hot. IMO its a personal decision.
