Sick kiddo looking for your thoughts on antibiotics and fever

my 3 yo has a really bad cold/fever (not too high) and yesterday i took him to the pedi who said he has a minor ear infection and conjunctivitis. we opted for augmentin, but this morning he woke with the highest fever since this whole illness started. i gave him 2 doses yesterday hoping for a better day today. his cough is persistent and a bit out of control to the point of kind of vomiting up mucus/saliva but his lungs were clear yesterday afternoon. is it normal for the antibiotics to take some time to kick in? i assume if the fever persists beyond today it may be something viral taking over. any thoughts? TIA

  • I would give the anitbiotic 2 - 3 days to kick in.  Then I would call the nurses line at the pedi office and see if they want me to bring him back in.

Ditto. I took DS in for an ear infection last week and it took a good 4 days before he was really looking any better. We're on day 6 and he's finally acting like his old self. Still coughing a little, that drainage has to go somewhere :(

  • Thanks. Poor guy started with a nasty cold and his nose is like a faucet and causing that non stop cough where he coughs so often it is killing me to watch. He acts fine when his fever is down. He looks like crap!
